I'd use the fluval and the sponge filter as the oxygen source rather than dropping an air stone. Why not filter while supplying oxygen?
BB is a wise choice!
Looking to start a 55 for discus, I planned on starting a bare bottom tank.
I figured at least one sponge filter in the tank, and a hang on the back filter also.
I also have a fluval 306 available. Please let me know what you would use

The 306 had biomax media, bio-foam an carbon bags in it. I thought carbon was bad for discus? What should I use in its place?

I'd run all of them, but I over filter all my tanks. tons of good bio media to be had. from lava rock to Bio Home Ultimate. I'm a fan of the later but I bought a large amount of it before it got so hyped up and popular.

you can't go wrong with any of these. I've ran 55g with double stacked sponge filters and nothing else and I've been good. However, a HOB filter is never a bad idea and I don't believe in over filtering so long as the flow isn't excessive. If the current blows them around, it is too much flow.
