Default Are split dorsal spines genetic?

Are splits between dorsal spines, or longer ones that interrupt the smooth top curve, genetic, which would be avoided as breeders?

Is it me or do most Of the Asian discus look like this ?
I have looked at the most recent listings from the importers [of Asian discus ] and the fish they are selling have split dorsal fins ?
How would you know whether a fish is genetically 'defective' or needing a 'manicure ' ?
With how most pet owners have issue clipping their dogs nails I myself would be real nervous about telling some one 'do a manicure ' although I know they are safely done often with good results ..

I've never given a Discus a haircut either, but I've been told that you cut with the lay of the fins rather than against. I do have one I could try on. It's never going to mature do a decent adult size. What is important to remember is not to cut into the hard rays because they will not grow back.

I see a lot of Discus for sale with fin problems. If you see a fish from a sponsor that you like other than the finnage, asking the seller if they can give the hair cut is not out of line.

How can tell genetic from needing adjustment ?
Or are they both the same ?
I have seen many clip fins on angels so I am not as much shocked by the advice but from a respect supplier I would not be pleased with this issue .
Maybe I am a little to quality orientated if that is possible ?
Maybe this is why I prefer German as I have never noticed it with them .
In all fairness maybe I was never looking for it either as I am truly new to the discus scene .

If it is genetic a hard ray is bent wrong. If I'm mistaken Willie will correct me.

I recently acquired a German import with this defect. Doesn’t bother me except for the fact that is was an expensive jumbo fish. And this must have been recognized before it was shipped

I am pretty sure you can not give the hard rays a "trim" as they will not grow back. I have never seen a bent hard ray on a wild fish but I have had wild fish with a broken hard ray which most likely happened during the collection process. I would venture to guess that a hard ray could be bent from rough handling.

However I went and read this thread http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showth...l-Hair-Cut!!!!. Perhaps hard rays can grow back. However I would suggest reading Al's thread before attempting any fin trimming.

Am I looking at a short 5th and a long 6th? Otherwise I've seen many wilds with split fins.
