Default Help with feeding fry brine shrimp question

Hi everyone. I have a breeding pair that have made several attempts so far. The furthest they got was to the free swimming stage. Unfortunately the fry did not attach to the parents slime coat. They have spawned again and I'm hoping they do better this time around.

I'm hoping that they progress further this time and, I have setup a brine shrimp hatchery. The directions on the brine shrimp suggests 1tsp of shrimp eggs for every quart of water. What are some of your experiences with this amount? I have only one breeding pair so I'm not sure if these directions will produce the right amount of shrimp for a single spawn. Any thoughts? Should I follow the directed amount or should I use less/more

I think it's a good question and it will be interesting to see what range of answers you get. I always have two containers going at a time, and rotate them between days. You want the BBS to be as newly hatched as possible, so you're getting as much of their yoke sack as you can. That's where the food value is. So keeping them more than a day starts to lose value. I have about 3 qts water in my homemade containers (inverted gallon jugs with the bottom cut out) and use at at most 1 tsp a day, usually end up throwing some out. You don't want extra sitting around in the tank for long fouling the water.

I use no more than .25 teaspoon in one liter. And half of that when the fry are very small in the first few days. Try to feed at about the 18 hour mark under ideal conditions. HTH

True! I dump mine after 2 days and have another hatchery ready to go...

I harvest my batches into a filtration cup which is rinsed with fresh salt water. Then I rinse the bbs from the cup into a separate container for feeding. I refrigerate the bbs between feedings to preserve food value. I can still see the bbs moving in the cup after 48 hours, but I usually only keep it for 48 hours before moving to the next batch.

If I know there's going to be too much bbs, I'll freeze half of the hatch in a plastic mini ice cube tray. After it freezes overnight, I pop them out of the ice cube tray and store in a container in my freezer. This sounds complicated but only adds about 5 minutes to the harvest process.

When I need bbs, I just drop ice cubes in the tank. You can see a stream of bbs come out and the fish going crazy.

Thanks for the quick answers everyone. Steve I have 2 containers setup as well.

Thanks Richard I'll use a 1/4 tsp for now and see how it goes.

Should I setup the containers to hatch 24 hours apart? I'm also wondering how often everyone feeds their fry daily

They don't live through the freezing but many fish will still eat them .
1/4 teaspoon will be plenty for 1 set of fry .
I hatch 3 batches a day with 3/4 of teaspoon in each .I am feeding fry in over 20 tanks with them .Many of my adult fish will eat them also [encourages breeding in smaller fish ].
I don't save any from one hatch to the next unless I freeze them right away .
The longer the BS live the less nutritious they become as they ingest the egg sac which is really what we want our fish to eat ..
Most good eggs should hatch in 18-24 hours so I just have morning /evening feedings and re fresh the hatcher for 24 hours later ..

OOPS.My reply in Post #3 said ".25 tablespoon" when I meant to say .25 TEASPOON. Can somebody change that lest someone be led astray? I feed fry 3 to 5 times daily. Not so much that fouls the water. Stay safe.

    Willie,
As Tom mention on a few post back that bbs lost
nutrition value as soon as they are alive. Selcon can add some of the nutrition back
Normally for a fully hatch bbs it take 24 hrs
but on some of my hatching I have a percentage of bbs hatching at 12 hours.
I was talking to the bbs eggs manufacture
they mention if you want the most nutritious
Brineshrimp I should deshell the eggs. Only
problem is the fry like live. Feeding old brineshrimp basically is just water. Oh, I did
use to do the ice cub trays too.
