I have one, I forget the model, but I don't think it's their smallest. It's very quiet, at least compared to the diaphragms I used to have. Makes me wonder what you have it sitting on, in case that matters.
I think I have their LPH 45.
I just received a linear piston air pump from Jehmco today. I've never used a piston pump before. It was to replace a Jehmco diaphragm pump that had worn out. I was under the impression that the linear piston pumps were virtually silent compared to diaphragm pumps. This is the smallest one they sell but it is not that quiet at all. I can hear it humming over the sound of 22 sponge filters bubbling. And no it's not back pressure. It hums like this even when it's not connected to the airlines. It's even louder than the diaphragm pump it was replacing.
For anyone who uses these piston pumps, what is your experience? Are they really practically silent or is there something wrong with this one they send me?

Call Jehmco and tell them about it. They will replace the pump for you if you got a bad one. IME they are silent and last forever. Mine has been going for 12 years and it is producing the same amount of air as it was on day one.

I have the same one as you, Steve.

Mine is the LPH26. It's sitting on top of a bench covered with 1/2" foam board. I don't think what it's sitting on is the issue. It sounded the same even when it was sitting on a carpeted floor.
I intended calling Jehmco in the morning but wanted to get feedback from people who have been running them. It moves air just fine. I was just disappointed it was not as quiet as I had hoped. I like a relatively quiet fish room. At least I don't want to listen to a pump humming.
Got this one Medo linear Air pump LH45 with a 20 outlet air manifold.DSCF1422_zps146277dc.jpg

Extremely quiet.....The pumps operate at a very low noise level, about that of a light ballast, as there are no crankshafts, connecting rods or ball bearings to create additional noise.
