    Default GAC Filter

I just bought a new RO unit. It had more what I was hoping for, and a couple of things that I don't totally understand.

It comes with a GAC filter. I looked up GAC filters and to me they sound like nothing more than another type of carbon filter. What does a GAC filter do what a normal everyday carbon block doesn't?

    Hi Liz
Gac stands for granulated activated carbon. They will remove chlorine, sediment, organic compounds, taste and Oder.
They will not remove salts, minerals or dissolved in organics.
So I think they are mainly inline with your ro to remove the above. If you are on a well I would say sediment.

GAC is just basic carbon . Granular Activated Carbon as mentioned .
I use Catalytic carbon in my ro unit as it is higher quality and not chemically enhanced like many cheaper carbons .
Being catalytic or 'surface modified' allows the carbon to be more efficient and last longer .
Most catalytic carbons are higher grade carbon made from coconut shells.
I get all my RO filters from BRS. If your RO is a basic 10 inch canister then the BRS filters will work for you also .
Catalytic carbon is labeled CTO carbon blocks on their site .

    Hi Liz,
I use both GAC and solid carbon block. Care
on selection the correct solid block some of
these filters can a result on small pin holes on the forehead permanently, so not all carbon blocks are the same. I have no
problems using the GAC but changing of
    this filter require more often.

Thanks, Cliff. Right now I don't go out much so at least for the next month or so I'll get mine from BRS.
