Nicely done! The tank looks great. What are you planning to stock it with?

I'm still up in the air on that, it's been really tough finding discus with the Covid shutdown.
Kenny didn't get a April order, Wattley's responses aren't really filling me with confidence, and I'm still waiting on stock confirmation from Golden state Discus.

Was planing on the normal sterbi cory, rummy nose, and discus tank, but I'm enjoying not having to replant everything the cory's dig up overnight.

It's all probably for the best, I'm still dealing with quite a bit of plant melt transitioning everything from emersed to submsersed.

So how long before they start spreading out?
Kind of funny but they just move around in a clump.

Fish and tank look great. They're a schooling fish so until the hierarchy develops they'll stick together for security.

Great job on the aquarium! You've got some skills! Excellent group of Discus too. We live near the store that distributes them. In fact, my wife and I bought several from them back in March. I'm a big fan of Kenny (able to pick up our orders in person too) but we couldn't leave the store without some.

Thank you for the kind words! I grew up in the Bay area and moved to Portland Oregon late in highschool, currently living in Alabama and I really miss the accessibility of city life. 😭 Thank goodness for eBay & Amazon pushing online shopping to the extremes.

I'm a little worried about this guy, I'm not really seeing it eat like the others are.
Anything I should be watching for that is unique to Discus, or that can be seen in these photos?

The forehead seems a little bit pinched

Small rough spot of scales near the lateral line

Only one that tries to squeeze under this wood, little bit of clamping when it does.

The rough spots look suspicious to me . I would keep an eye on them .

    Water testing Tank & Tap

    Tap
    PH - 7.6~8.0?
    Ammonia - 0
    Nitrite - 0
    Nitrate - 0
    KH - 35ppm
    GH - 90ppm
    TDS - 83-87

    Tank
    PH - 7.2
    Ammonia - 0
    Nitrite - 0
    Nitrate - 1-2?
    KH - 35ppm
    GH - 90ppm
    TDS - 94 - 96

Not really sure what is going on with the PH tests 7.2 is usually normal.

There is less O2 in warmer water .
CO2 makes water register a lower pH even though in reality it has not changed the pH at all. O2 makes water register a higher pH although it has not really changed .
That is why so many allow their water to off gas /acclimate and pre heat it for 24 hours before use [besides micro bubbles] IMO ? ..
Take a cup out of tank and let it cool down and test it then ?

Nice kitchen and the dog is telling you something [ " feed me !] ...

It is a very nice set up. Here goes. How are you going to clean the substrate and how often? It will need to be done. I think I see dark substrate under the light colored too. Deep substratum is not a great idea for a discus tank. Most folks that have tried it with young discus have failed because they didn't clean the substratum often enough.

I vacuum about 20-30 gallons out of the tank daily to keep the substrate clean, and plan on a 75% water change on Sundays.
Current stock is very low, 8 Oto cats, 8 Discus, and 100+ cherry shrimp.

The dark substrate is organic potting soil, capped with pool filter sand.
It's a semi walstad method tank to help keep the plants happy without the need to dose strong fertilizers.

Also the fish a larger than they seem from the pictures, half of them are pushing 5 inches.

So the White checkerboard is sorta vibrating? They are also pecking at the driftwood.
I'm guessing this might be mating behavior?
