    Oxboy,

Do a site search for ‘sand’ and you’ll find tons of threads, advice, opinions and sources.

No need to be sorry. I’ve done the same thing.

Might get too many hits in that query...

I get mine from the beach and/or intercoastal water way. I like a little intercoastal WW sand because it tends to do good things for my plants. The beach sand (same darn sand as the other... but not wet or by saw grass, puff mud, etc... just normal SC local beach sand) usually does good for adding "stuff" that keeps my ph steady plus other goodies (obviously I can't prove any of it scientifically... only assumed after comparisons of store bought substrates in the past).

My way I am confident is "frowned upon". But with sand, my way of sand has not caused harm compared to some of the other "hmmm... let's try this" ideas I've done (e.g., I gather my own driftwood... but I've made a few mistakes with DW)

If you're not by a beach (and it was me), I'd find a type of sand I liked from a stream or lake within an hours drive. If you see any signs of oil or Fuel slicks, I don't use it. Also be cognizant if there are any farms nearby that may use pesticides that could run into you whatever body of water you're at... if you have the time, put a good amount of it in a very small tank or big ars pickle jar and throw in a few cheap Tetras for the day. If they live, then my behind would use it. If they die then, obviously don't use it!

I buy my sand and other substrates from my local building supply stores. It comes in different natural colors and sizes. The last sand was #2 silica from Shaw Brick. $6 a bag.

No Pablo it’s not sand! But it is very fine grade gravel. No Harry that Long Island gravel is just to dirty. Takes to long to clean. This stuff comes rinsed .

When I was adding almost 200lb sand to my tank I was seriously considering to take some from desert. At the end dunes close to me were too yellowing or redish, which didn't match my design.
    Finally I bought sand filter.

You might take a look on similar sand thread there: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showth...ht=sand+gravel

    Hi @Oxboy

I strongly recommend HTH Pool Filter Sand. Why? Because unlike most 'sand' which is a combination of a variety of small stones, coral, and shells which can effect (i.e. increase) the pH of my aquariums HTH Pool Filter Sand is actually crushed white quartz and is inert. It has a uniform fine grain size and my Corydoras dig into it with impunity. It is white which I initially thought might be a drawback but when doing my water changes if it looks 'dirty' I just siphon off the top 1/8" and add some new clean, white sand. Don't let the bag color of the packaging fool you, the sand is white. Bonus, it's about $10 for a 50# bag. And yes, you can grow plants in it as well.

I don't know what kind of sand it is and what it is for, but I know for sure that the pools are no longer the same as before. Previously, pools were clean even without purifiers. It seems to me that people have begun to treat their property worse. Few people take good care of the pool. They don't even always buy the right pool cleaner. You can always buy pool cleaner from different websites. For example, I recently found out about a site that has reviews for the best pool cleaner. From there you can take something for yourself. A friend of mine has been using this site for a long time to find a good pool cleaner for himself.
