Default Do Sponge Filters reduce the effectiveness of Metronidazole?

For example, a sponge filter is used in the hospital tank along with metronidazole. Will filters suck in the medication as it takes in water?

    Hi OrangeC,

The simple answer is no. A sponge filter is make from inert foam which simply provides a media surface of beneficial bacteria to reside. Any filter which contains carbon will remove meds. Also other resins like purigen will also.

A sponge filter used in a breeding tank would be sponge media only but with carbon added would remove the MG or MBz?

Yes. I did a bit of research. Carbon will remove all meds. As long as it is just a sponge filter, it's fine.

Thanks! I turned off the external filter in the breeding tank and am going to get a sponge filter today at the lfs to replace the external one.
