I have several neighbors who have bee hives around me and it's truly amazing the work those little guys do. If you have seen a bee hive from the inside it's unreal.
I should have my first hive come next spring.
Thats really Sad Andy...Honey bees have taken a pounding from parasites and pesticides over the last few decades. I read that compared to last year, this year looks to be a good year for Honey bees.. My yard is like an oasis here. All the yards around meare monotype grass lawns... no weeds etc. Right now my yard is a sea of clover, and I have planted a ton of Cone Flowers, Milkweed and Chicory. The yard also has Rose of Sharon everywhere. To my Neighbors It probably looks liek an eyesore... but to the Bees, bugs and Birds its Probably a well needed all day and night Diner.

Bees are in real trouble. 10 years ago I had 2 hives that did well for a while and in 3 days lost all of the bees despite
prescribed treatments. Tried again with the same results, gave up.
In re: to bog turtles. I was always interested in turtles especially box turtles.
A long time ago,[ 45 years] I heard of a colony of bog turtles at the Audubon sanctuary in Ct.
I think in was in Westport, north of the parkway but not sure. You might want to check that out.
I went there and there were a lot of turtles, mostly spotted.
The bog turtle is protected and if you find one your supposed to report it to the DEEP and, not tell
anybody where it is.
Good luck

My neighbor has honey bees. I would love to give it a try again but I have enough on my plate already. No way I would try to photograph one. I have a good camera. I just don't have the camera smarts.

Al your bee pictures are wonderful!!! Pat so are yours. You both sure know your photography!
About honey bees here in eastern NC, we used to have them all over the area, now I never see a single one in my large flower gardens. In our 5 years here, not a single one. But we do have bumble bees, wasps, mason bees and tons of Japanese Beetles right now. There are many people with hives making honey to sell around this area, don't know where they get the bees. BTW, I never use any kind of insecticide in my garden. Except for fire ant killer. That is a necessity.

When I was much younger, my mother would not allow me to go outdoors without shoes due to the honeybees. I would spend summers observing them. I rarely see one now. I am nearer the city limits but I have noted this absence in other locations. Sad.
Al and Pat, very impressive photos. Macro shots let us see what we normally don't see and that's what you both have here, the composition and lighting are spot on.
Shan, you asked about a macro lens with discus. Used a Sigma 150 macro on the shot below but generally I prefer a wide angle zoom lens 24-120.
