    Default Lost of fishes

    Hi Guys,

I manage to have a good batch (around 60no.) that are almost 3 months old now on a 129 litre fish tank.
I have notice that every week from the last month one or two fish dyes. Because is only one off, I was not really worried as all the others are doing fine, but now and then another one shows up dead what makes me wonder if you guys have faced the same issue.

I have slowed of my water changes now to 3x a week, but all my parameters seems fine.

I thought could be some egg shells that sometimes go from the BBS, but I stopped feeding them with Brine Shrimp for a week now and I had two news deaths yesterday.

    Any opinion helps

    Thanks

Just curious. Are you saying 60 new fish? And in a 129liter tank? If so that’s your problem. How big were they when you got them? We are talking about discus?

They are not new fish, they are my juveniles, 3 months old now from my first successful fry.
I keep loosing them and cannot find what is going wrong. I have already lost more than half of my fry.

Will fill out the form below to see if helps:

    1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
No symptoms that I can see. All seem to be healthy and active until they show up dead.

    2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
Same as above. The only thing I can notice is that they separate from the others and become less active before dying, but cannot see anything wrong with them.

    3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.
    None so far.

    Tank/Water

    4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
Fluval Curve 129 litres bought just to raise my breeding fry.

    5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
    60% Sunday
    30% Tuesday
    30% Thursday

    6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
Running for 3 Months now, bare bottom, nothing inside.

    7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
I do not age the water.

    8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?
Seachem Prime + Discus Buffer to new water.

    9. Parameters and water source;

Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.

    - temp _____ 28C

    - ph _____ 6.4

    - ammonia reading ____ 0

    - nitrite reading ____ 0

    - nitrate reading ____ 0

What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.

    - well water ____

    - municipal water ____ 100%

    - RO water ____

    10. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
    Nope.

    11. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.
Sera ImmunPro Breeder Food and Tetra Flakes 2x a day
Frozen Brine Shrimp or Frozen Discus Food (Fish Fuel Co. brand) twice a week.

    12. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.
    Sorry, none.

I don’t know that you are feeding enough for 12 week old fry. However, with WC only 3x a week and no nitrates there is a problem with the cycle. How are you filtering (I might have missed that)? Also, you have 60 fry in a 30g? I would think that size tank for 60 2 inch fry is too small.

    Hi Carlos,

A few thoughts; please measure your nitrates again. My gut tells me it should be high with the number of fish per tank size and percentage of water changes. 30 gallon is not a lot of water volume for sixty two inch or larger fish. I would think you should be doing two large water changes a day. Are you seeing any bloating with the dead fry? Also what is your TDS or GH. You might need to be adding minerals so the fish grow properly.

I am down to around 25-30 only now as I lost a lot already.
My filter is a build in from the 129 Fluval curve glass tank. I did add a sache of Purigem to it. But I believe maybe the biology is not enough in this filter. I am looking into buying siporax to add to the filter.
I did a huge WC yesterday (80%) as I've lost another 2 big ones, and I've noticed some really tiny white worms on the surface close to the glass. I've searched online and its says that they are not harmful to fish, but I believe it is a sign that might have an issue with my filtration...
Will check the nitrates today and let you know.
