Not gonna talk smack about anyone's fish here.
But I have really narrowed my buying purchases to only 2 sources.
Miranda at Chicago Discus and my lfs that gets their stock from Sun Pets in Florida.
I am not sure but I THINK Mirada's fish are Malaysian???
Correct me if I am wrong.
I am sure Sun Pets are.
I love Hans and his fish are superb looking.
However, I have purchased 3 in the past year and everyone has gone downhill eventually.
Now, maybe this could be from mixing fish from different areas???
I hear that takes affect real fast though. Not over months and months.
But those fish seem weak.
They don't have strong wills to live.
If I have had a problem with a fish this year, it has been those.
But, I'll tell you what, Chicago Discus fish are the BOMB!
Hardy, no problems whatsoever.
Also, the two I have gotten from Sun Pets are small, yet they rule the tanks they are in!
They are not bullies, but NO ONE gives them any crap.
First ones to come out and eat. Lots of color and attitude.
They have done quite well with Miranda's fish and they are 1/4 the size.
Just my observations and opinions on my purchases.
I am driving across town to Aquatic Critter again today for some supplies.
They have a huge tank full of Stendker Discus.
Just gorgeous. But they don't do well for me, so I will just enjoy looking at them.
vinni, chicago discus are beautiful, but i was looking for tetras. i'm northeast of Birmingham
Good time to order tetras. The first batches are coming in from the Amazon right now. I usually order from snook21 off Aquabid. John is a reasonable guy to deal with if things go wrong. I say this because ordering tiny fish shipped in, especially tetras, is tricky at best. But the first batches are usually the most robust. Having said that, I'd suggest that you also check out the LFS. If you see a full tank of tetras these days, they're usually an early shipment as well. You'll pay more, but everything is guaranteed to be alive.
In either case, I recommend that you get a spare tank ready, something with a lot of aeration, and feed them fresh bbs for a week. This is not a quarantine, but no one feeds tetras from the time they get scooped out of the Amazon to the time they hit your fishroom. These guys don't have much in reserve, so a week of good nutrition will significantly improve survival rate.
At my age, everything is irritating.
If your still interested in discus and rams. Here’s some videos of bandits rams and Hans discus I bought in June. and this is those discus today.
Willie, thanks for the info. I read that snook21 is good. I'll order from him definitely. what is fresh BBS?
Tom, when all is up and running, I do plan to get at least rams from coralbandit. he's got some gorgeous ones.
I did plan on getting at least 1 pleco but I've read lately, that they'll suck slime coat off the discus. I wonder, like Liz said, if you feed it
a slice of zucchini or cucumber every few days, will that prevent that.
My tank will be a 75Gal with an FX-6 filter. Back in the early 90's, I owned a pet/fish store, so I'm not a novice but boy have things changes since then!
