Default Change is the Only Constant

A couple of my favorite fish passed away this weekend. No disease symptoms whatsoever so I'm assuming that they died from old age. The first one started laying down on Thursday and I moved it into a quarantine tank with salt and higher temperature just to make the fish comfortable.

It lasted 24 hours. The second one laid down Friday and died quickly.

These were two of four select grade Red Eagles I got from Kenny back in late 2014/early 2015. They were 5" then, so that would make them ~7 years old. Other than moving slower and eating less, there were no obvious signs of aging.

Both of them enjoyed big water changes daily (~1,500 since they came into my fishroom), lots of beefheart, but also dried food and FDBW's. They were in a 110-gal tank, but went into a 75 last year to make way for the altums. Still, both measured ~7" at the end.

There's one Red Eagle left and my discus show tank is a lot less showy now.

Not sad, just marking a transition.

Sorry to hear Willie. At least it was quick for them.

That's a real shame Willie. They certainly were nice looking fish, which im sure gave you lots of enjoyment. They were in good care for the seven years you had them. Is that how long you usually get from your discus?

I got the Red Eagles from Kenny at 5" so they were ~15 months old by then and kept them for 5 - 6 years, so 7 years is an estimate. But I've certainly had my share of fish die from disease, operator error or unknown reasons. If they last a year in my fishroom, they'll usually last a long time. I should keep better track of my fish, but I know these came after the Chicago NADA show in 2014.

I've had older discus before and many of them will show old age. Some of the classic strains, like cobalts, will get a hunchback shape. I've also seen that in older PB strains. I've also had a group of old brown discus that developed wrinkles by Year 4! If you want to compete with discus, the best age is 18 - 30 months when they've attained full size and still have vigor.

    They were beauties, Willie
    I really like PBs.
    Especially Checkerboards.
Hope we get 7 years with ours.

We had a rough week as well.
Nancy had to put Dally down.
Her 27 year old paint/buckskin mare.
Nancy was there with her at birth and at the end.
It was a very, very sad day and Nancy is doing well, but taking it hard.
She was very attached to that horse.
We buried her in our back yard by the big trees.
    Beautiful spot.
It was a peaceful passing. The vet came over yesterday and took care of it well.
One guy from the cemetery next door came over and buried her for us.

Not meaning to derail your thread Willie.
Guess I just had to tell someone.

Been a rough week for both of us.
