    Default Mixing strains

    Starting up a 90g tank.

When it's time to get my fish, is it ok to mix strains? I'm going to have 6 in my 90. I'd prefer to have six different strains?

Is this a no no? Or if it's ok, do some strains work better with others? Or does it not matter...?

For breeding some should not be mixed otherwise all discus live in harmony with one another but for the cichlid territorial nature of the fish.

It's only a problem if you don't quarantine. If you can, buy all of them from one source at one time.
At my age, everything is irritating.

Won't be breeding, will definitely be QT'ing, and buying all at the same time from same place. Awesome...sounds like I'm good.

    Thanks

All my tanks have different strains. No problems. But as stated buy from the same place. I would recommend buying online from one of the vendors here or Hans discus. In a 90 you could easily do 9or 10. I have 13 in a 125 now . Good luck!! And keep us posted .

Same person as OP. Couldn't figure out my password; so started a new.

Anyhoo, I plan on other fish (Rams, Rummynose, Corys, etc). Still ok to do 9?

You should really tell us what kind of tank you're planning like whether it's going to have a substrate and plants or if it's BB. We also need to know how much WC you plan on and how many of each dither fish.

90g planted tank, with sand substrate. 20% water changes weekly. Filtered by two Aquaclear 110s.

Here's my plan. Obviously flexible...but would love to have this.

    8 Discus
    6 Sterbai Corydoras
    6 Rummynose Tetras
    12 Cardinal Tetras
    4 German Blue Rams

The Discus won't do well with that setup. WC is more important than filtration. It might work out if you changed 30 to 40 percent of the water every day. Even with a BB tank I'd change at least 30% daily. Your Cardinals will likely be eaten by the Discus unless you grow them out to close to adult size.

So, if I don't do Cardinals, I'd be ok?

What size discus are you getting? I’d also drop the cardinals up the rummie noses! And the big thing is read upon these fish. 20% a week wouldn’t be good in my community tank. You will be doing 2-3 weekly 50% wc with 5-6” discus. 2.5-4.5 you’ll be doing 50% daily for at the least the first month. Success with discus starts with water changes! Have you checked your water?

Don't know the exact sizes yet; but would like to start with Juvies and watch them grow up. They'll start in my 55g bare bottom quarantine tank. I have no problem doing water changes. Trying to read as much as I can now, and asking questions.

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone!

For juvies you will need daily water changes and many feeding. What do you plan to feed. I use freeze dried black worms
