Default HOB filter for a tank with a rim

I have a 29 gallon tank that I age my tap water in. I have always run an HOB filter in which I change the filter media once a month. It is always quite dirty so Ii feel it does serve a purpose. The initial HOB filter that I used was recalled and advice was given to no longer use.

I replaced it with an Aqueon QuietFlow 20... it did not sit well on the rimmed tank but I was able to force it low enough to work. I remove once a month when I clean the ageing tank.

When reinstalling after tank cleaning it broke.

All that to say, does anyone have any recommendations on an HOB filter that site well on a rimmed tank.

    Thanks

Our LFS only carries Aqueon and I see many different available on E-Bay and internet

Great hob filter that will fit. Tidal 75 or 110 no more changing cartridges it comes with a sponge and a bag of media. You add a layer of poly floss between these and your good to go. Rinse every 2 weeks. Aquaclear filters same as above but a bigger sponge. These are great tried and true filters been around 30+yrs. only thing they won’t restart with a power outage and the motor may burn out if no one is home to restart it. Marineland bio-wheel 350. This is the cheapest and does come with cartridges. But you change out the cartridge for sponge and add some media in the front of the sponge and it is good to go for yrs. this is also tried and true been around 30+ yrs too. I used the 350 on a 29g for years. For under $30 you can’t go wrong. I use the first and last ones. Both work great. Thing with the tidal it comes with all you need but floss.

I've always used the Marineland Bio Wheels. They come in many sizes and Petsmart has had some really low prices recently. I got several 250's for about $15 each and an Emperor 400 for $40. They come with extra media inserts that I've cut out sections of and I clamped in some floss material so I don't have to use the carbon.

I’ve also used Marineland bio wheels w success. These days I’m happy w Aqueon. My 30g tank has an Aqueon AC 70 that fits fine and does a great job. Each of my 55 & 75 g tanks have two AC 110s. All my tanks also have an elaborate Sump tank set up as well.

When you buy a small HOB it will not fit the rim of larger tanks .
Why the Aqueon 20 would not fit well on a 29 is really just the filter being too small.
As stated by most a larger size will fit your rim without issue .
Since you are just filtering your water while it ages floss is fine .
You really don't want an active bio filter going or your source water may end up with nitrates and or other living bacteria .
I use a circulation pump [power head/gyre] and air stone in my barrels with no media .
I do have a filter set up on my water line coming in that I use 5 and 1 micron cartridges on with catalytic carbon before going into aging barrels ..
I feel that is a better way of cleaning my source water and like you feel it is worth it when I change them out .

I use a router to do a little trimming for a better fit on plexi tanks.
