    Default Green Discus

I was looking for pics and good examples of Green Discus. I wanted to
see them as adults before I bought them from Uncle Sams. Well I
bought two. I don't know how they got the name green discus when
they are brown. Anybody know? and do they get greener as adults.
I think the discus below is a green discus. I have been looking deep
for specimens. Even googled. None to be found. Does anyone have
a mature green discus to show off. See below.

Not a Green Discus. Personally, I LOOOOVE that discus though!

Here's my personal thoughts on "brown, green, blue, heckle..."...: I'm glad that people (over the past 25 years) have began to ask (demand, nag, expect...) to know FIRST what region & river, seasonal lake, ginormous creeks (they aren't streams connecting to the amazon) the fish are from THEN "are they brown, green, blue, or Heckle?" Some Systems may have browns that overlap heckles and cross breed at times, or blues with browns or ...etc....

BUT... your fish is not a green. I REALLY like it... but not a green and I rarely ever say that I know I'm right (and I mean RARELY!!!!!!)

Wild green discus are not green, but are brown based w green hues. Your fish does not appear to be a green discus, at least not a pure specimen, though it is a pretty discus

I seen domestic breed green discus sold as Ocean Green with a metallic colour.....I think Lee Koon Yen created that strain.

Dan, I sort of wouldn't say brown based... they can be a purplish merged to faded yellow base with thicker striations or brown purplish or more yellow like a barely ripened banana with thick eye bar or even a medium based brown without a hint of red on base yet thick, green hued striations (whether slight, half Royal or royal) and have no or plenty off red spots on lower, back quadrant.

Again, my opinion and not an ichthyologist (my parents said, "be anything you want... but not a teacher and we can't afford NYU for ichthyology..."... yet I loved literature & fish... so I got drunk and joined Marine Corps... "SQUIRREL!!!!!").

I know they separated Heckle away from brown, blue, and green, but I think green should have also been its in separate category.

I too bought that green discus from Uncle Sams. I just liked that it looked more natural than all my others.798DE826-E4EB-4C55-8B00-358FE2E5C647.jpg

That's why I was interested in the green too. It's looks very natural and wild.
Something I wanted in the mix of my other discus. There is a video on google
of adult green parents with fry from uncle sams. That's the closest I can get
    to seeing them as adults.

Must be a cross because they don't look like greens but more like browns.

Thanks! It’s been hurting lately. Took a beating with the cross contamination I had. But it’s on the mend . Just put back in main tank. But it looks like it shrunk. Is that possible?

They could have called it the Christmas Discus. More red than green, however.

That is an amazing looking fish. I agree that the links above have a lot of information regarding the topic.

The sunlight was good on my tank this afternoon so I took
a couple close ups of my green discus. They are about 4".
When they get larger 6" they take are more green shine
on the body I was told.
