    Default SIPORAX leaching SI

    Hello Fellow Fishkeepers,

I am looking so setup a tank with Siporax in my filter.
I learned from a saltwater forum that it will leach Silicates which can be kept in check with every other week WC 20%

If you can give me some tips on how to manage this SI rise, It would be much appreciated.

How much SIPORAX did you use on your system? What is your water volume?
My tank will be about 90 gallons. How much SIPORAX to use is undecided.

    Thanks,
    -Harry

Siporax seems to be just another type of filter media. Forget it and just use sponge,matrix,biohome…..what type of filtration do you plan to use? What type of tank set up are you going for? Bare bottom or more traditional? Are you setting up a discus tank?

I plan on a Tropheus Duboisi Cichlid Tank. Ive had Discus before but did not like the daily water change experience.
Right now, I live in SE Asia and my only other option is Matrix which the lighter pebbles will rattle in my filter. I plan to use a Canister Filter with fine sand as substrate (have not decided what kind).

I wouldn't be too concerned about leaching silicates in fresh water from the media. Most substrates for fresh water tanks are made of silica gravel or sands.

If you're keeping Lake Tanganyika cichlids, some of that saltwater substrate can be mixed with your other substrate to keep things high in minerals and the ph up.

I do have access to Aragonite Sand but knowing that it will fluctuate my water hardness, it kinda scares me.

Looks like Sera Sirorax is worth using as a bio media .

Those fish love hardness and a high ph. What is you water source ph? I used to make my own water hardener when I kept Tropheus, but I changed 80% each WC and kept it stable. With smaller wc's (25-30%), I thinks a mix will work out fine.
