Default Burned fins from overdose of Pottasium Permanganate

    Hi

I have just taken over 5 Young Discus from a friend of mine, as he had given up on them.

The story is, that he bought the Discus in good health (beautifull fish !) and wanted to give them a quarantine bath of PP before putting them in his aquarium. For some reason he must have overdosed the PP, as the Discus got their fins burned (!) They are apparently doing well (and eating) now, BUT some are lacking their entire tail fin, and some have burned fins with white markings on the end of the remaining fins.

My question: Will the fins grow out again and is it worth giving them a second chance ? They are well fead and beautifull

Hi Roer, bummer on the burnt fins but fins go grow back and can be trimmed if needed. I would be more concerned about damaged gills. Would suggest lots of clean water (thru water changes) and salt to aid will gill function.

BIG bummer ! And yes partly damaged fins will likely grow out again. My main concern are the ones that are missing the entire tail-fin (burned to the root....)

Hope their inner gills are OK - hard to tell...

Good idea with the salt - thank you

On the tail and gills it will be a waiting game to see how much healing/growth you get. Hope it goes well.

The way I use PP is to create a stock solution where one drop of the solution is 1 ppm. Normal dosage for adult discus is 2 ppm for four hours. It is way to easy to mishandle and hurt the fish.
