Can brine shrimp transmit diseases to discus?
So I know this guy who has bred discus for about 20 years. He told me to never feed bloodworms and brine shrimp to my discus because of the risk of them transmitting diseases.
Know, as far as bloodworms go, that risk makes sense and is well documented. On the other hand, i was skeptical about the truth regarding brine shrimp being able to transmit diseases to discus, since they are raised in saltwater.
I did extensive research on the subject and found some evidence suggesting that this doesn't happen, but nothing conclusive.
Does anyone know any studies or have concrete evidence as to whether or not adult brine shrimp, live or frozen (but not rotten) can actually transmit any parasites or other types of diseases to discus?

Re: Can brine shrimp transmit diseases to discus?
As long as they in good condition, no. Pathogens can't transmit from salt water to fresh or fresh to salt. This is one reason it's recommended to use a salt water fish if using fish in a discus food recipe. Sorry, no scientific evidence to provide.
And bloodworms are perfectly fine for discus as long as they come from a reputable source like Hikari and the discus is healthy to begin with.

I mostly agree with Brian. Do be sure to clean your brine shrimp hatchery every time you use it. I do believe that velvet can be transmitted from a dirty hatchery. Sorry to admit that I learned this from experience when I had to go to the kitchen from the fish room when I had to clean the hatchery. Just a normal rinsing and wiping down the inside is all you need to do.
