Hey Cliff. The experiment is underway. The young pair spawned and their eggs ore in the pitchers of RO.

Great, we'll see after a few days how fertile this pair is.

This is an interesting Ram thing. The darned things prefer to spawn while I'm in bed asleep. I woke up this morning early and found 2 pairs had spawned. I only had enough pure RO to keep the eggs of one of them. The eggs that I moved to RO still look good. The eggs in tap are already mostly all white.

I have to use a different container for the Ram spawns that I do for the Discus spawns but except for the container it's the same thing.

As far as I'm concerned if this doesn't work there is no point in me going on. I'm a breeder of fish. There's nothing wrong with anyone wanting to have a good healthy Discus tank just to look at. I need to always be reaching for a goal that will be followed by a greater goal. Breeders are a different breed...

If this does work I'll be able to keep trying to breed what in my eye is the most nearly perfect Discus. Since there is no such thing as perfect this project will be without an end point. I want my fish to be unique enough to give my type of Discus a name. I haven't figured out what it might be yet. Strong Blue Based SS with Full Body discreet Red Spots is descriptive but terribly awkward.

I know I'm counting my chickens before they're hatched and I know better because I keep chickens. I just can't help myself.

The older pair appears to be the best quality pair. Their tubes are down and the pitcher of pure RO is hanging inside their tank waiting for them to make me even more excited.

Yes! I just checked on them an they are doing the deed. The eggs will be ready to move when I have my evening snack of triskits with cream cheese and a bit of smoked salmon.

I am very interested to read the results. I have never tried in pure R/O water.

At my end, no spawns/eggs lately, I can’t wait for another spawn

Just curious, large volumes would be cost prohibitive or at least painful, but wouldn't distilled water at ~$1.00/gallon to fill the pitcher suffice if RO water is unavailable?

    Sure. Distilled works just fine.

No. Mom was no longer dark when the babies free swam this morning. She must have been eating because there are many fewer now. I took mom out, lowered the water level to just above dad's dorsal, and removed the black sponge. I even removed the air stone for a while so that if dad is vibrating for them he will have no competition with other things confusing the fry. I'll leave them alone for a few hours and check again. I can't leave them without air and filtration forever.

Cliff, I'm about to throw in the towel and try artificial as you suggested I do a long time ago. I'll did around the forum and read up on how to do it now.
