    Default Sponge Filter Going Bad?

May sound like a silly question but can a sponge filter go bad? i.e. start to deteriorate so that it appears to be dissolving? I have a hang on the back filter and recently the filter floss media has a dark almost black appearance.

    Thank you,

Just rinse it and squeeze it out. They will turn dark over time but if it falls apart while rinsing then it may be time to replace it.

I've never had one fall apart. Do you have Apple snails? I had them once and they actually ate some of the sponge.

I've had the Hagen sponge for their hang on filters go bad. They're different critters than the sponge used on air driven filters. I've had Hydro sponges last decades+ and keep on going.
Any sponge dirty enough will sure turn water dark in a bucket.
