    Default surface agitation

    Hello all,

This is the picture of my new tank with the spray bar - I'm playing around with it at the moment.

The main thing concerning me at the moment is the amount of Surface agitation (i know it's tough to judge from a picture!). I'm thinking I'll require a wave maker to go along the top of the surface to increase, but wondering your thoughts?

I think that spray bar is doing its job. What type of filtration are you using?

For tanks 4' or longer, I like to use something like this to promote aeration. These tend to be too disruptive in 3'-tanks.

At my age, everything is irritating.

In a 4 foot tank a FX6 would be plenty surface movement. I had a 6 foot and it was great for surface movement.

I have an old wave maker in the loft I could use... But I don't want too much flow

The spray bar spreads out the flow, so the strength isn't as great. It's got a good ripple across the middle of the tank. But just wondering if it's enough

I have a 4 foot tank and use the FX4. I have plenty of circulation, including 3 air stones. I would think the spray bar would be sufficient.

If I have a sump in a 6 foot tank, are items like this necessary?

You'll have plenty surface movement with the spray bar and a FX6. In fact probably better with the spray bar.

With the sump your water is aerated by falling though your first part and more so as it goes through the sump. A freshwater sump should have areas where the water rises and falls before it’s pumped back into the tank.

I use airstones in my sump for 16 hrs/day (off when CO2 comes on)

I can tell the fish like it
