I'm going way out in left field here but just maybe the female didn't release any sex pheromones, since she didn't actually lay eggs.
Hi all,
I got a 'proven' discus pair last week Thursday. I say 'proven' since the guy i got them from had a 12 of the same color in the tank, so it was hard to distinguish. However I am fairly confident we actually got the pair. The also have all of the classic male/female traits as far as thats an actual indication.
Since day 2 they have been displaying (shivering, cleaning the cone together and hanging out always together).
This morning i did a WC and i just noticed the girl cleaning the cone again and dry humping the cone (like going over it like shes laying eggs, but none there after she passes). At the same time the male is on the other side of the tank and completely uninterested.
The girl will do a 'dry hump', then swim over too the male, coax him towards the cone, and keep shivering, but the male just doesnt really react.
As much as they were both displaying (the male even started it on day 2), as less is he doing now.
Anyone had any experience with this?

They are "proven"... Have you actually seen them spawn and raise fry? I've had males that show interest and actually guard eggs fiercely but make no attempt to fertilize.
Also, moving them into a new environment can throw them off cycle.
Possible Pair - Two discus that show breeding potential.
Confirmed Pair - Two discus that have spawned and produced wigglers.
Proven Pair - Two discus that have spawned and raised fry
Hi Tim, regarding your question about the female making dry runs. This is normal with my fish. Perhaps that is a way to determine if the breeding site is "clean" enough but just a guess.

Your discus are talking to you....are you listening
Hiya Jeep,
They have produced wigglers before. Obviously not seen with my own eyes as i was just there the day of the purchase, but seen on pics!
I always ask the seller show me the babies before buying. May want to add another male this will force the pair to bond .

agreed! this was a pair of blue diamond I, which are very scarce in my area, so i took the risk. They were in a community tank, so would eat their spawn at the wiggler stage. Im just going to let it go for about a week and see what happens then and report back!
That's what I'd do in your position. If they are really a pair they should get it on after a while.

Allright, so now my fish have even confused me more...!
The male got really beaten up by the female today; like scales missing and just being chased all the time.
So i decided to get some eggcrate to make a DIY divider in the tank. As soon as i put in the divider, both of them started frantically pacing the crate near each other. I left it for an hour and the pacing still went on, so i took it out again to see what would happen. AGAIN the male was being chased and clearly not liking it.
Put the crate back in, but they have been pacing like 2 hrs now. Im really at a loss of whats going on with these fish...
It sounds like the "pair" you chose was not the pair you were looking for.
Mama Bear
Can you post profile pics of each one?
Well, IMO they are at least male ands female...
I agree.
Mama Bear
hahaha, well i got that going then...
One breeder once told me that you can put any male and female together and when you put them in RO water, they will spawn regardless and fertilize. Not sure if this is an old wives tale or actually works? They're stendkers, so should be fine on tap water here as well.
