    Default Heckel cross

    Hi there

My name is Christophe and I am French.
I raise HECKEL CROSS discus in a 240 liter bare tank with an external JBL 1502 filter and three Hexauster filters.
I change 50% of water every day and despite that I still have nitrites, luckily I added three doses of SAECHEM PRIME.
    What am I doing wrong?

Any trace of nitrites means that the tank is not completely cycled.
At my age, everything is irritating.

It sounds like your filter is still catching up to the heavier bio load. Are you able to obtain Sea Chem Stability? It will help your filter catch up. Otherwise the only answer is to keep up with heavy water change.

Your test kit may be fine, but everyone here, including me recommends the API test kit. Or you might be able to take a water sample to your local fish store. The place I use tests water free of charge with the API test kit.

I'm afraid that unless your test kit is giving you an incorrect reading, I'm at a loss. With a nitrate reading your fish should be showing signs of stress. Are they?

Unfortunately the API tests cannot be found and my fish shop uses JBL.
My discus are always hungry and grow normally and do not seem to stress.
The problem is that I have to use PRIME and STABILITY every day and I'm afraid of the long term consequences.

I don't know, Christophe. You might take a sample to the fish store anyway just to confirm your nitrite reading. If you don't add the Stability do your fish stress? Prime is always needed to remove chlorine from the water. It will neutralize ammonia, but I don't think it has any affect on nitrites.

I just googled it and according to Seachem it does neutralize nitrates and nitrites.

Is it possible that a cycle never happens?
