    Default strange water odor

I have a 110 galon tank. Recently, about 3 weeks, I have a very strong warm swampy smell from the tank. I cleaned my filters ( 3 - 2217s) and purchased new aging barrels. The smell is persisting. I have 9 adults, 2 cories, 1 bristle nose pleco.. I do w/cs every 2 days with 80 gallons of aged water. Parameters of the tank - PH 7.4. Ammonia - 0, nitrites 0 , nitrates less than 5, temp 82. . i have sand substate. I have never changed my filter media, just cleaned (about every 6 weeks). The tank has been set up for about 18 months, but the media i used from my old tank. the sand and filter media are about 6 years old. Any suggestions on what I can try to remove or reduce the smell.

    Thanks,
    jim

Any plants? I had some in pots and they started to die and the roots smelled awful. Could smell it in the tank.

I’md replace the gravel. You likly have an anaerobic meltdown that can lead to a crash.
    See this in marine tanks.
Just a thought that’s easy to do.
    Remove the fish before hand

Well what removes smell is carbon. About the only thing it’s good for. With sand take your python or whatever hose you use and vacuum out some sand. Go to the bottom of the tank. See if it stinks. Sand is known to hold gases in and its best if stirred around during water changes.

I actually vacuum the sand every other w/c.. i put the siphon to the bottom of the tank to break up any air pockets in the sand. on a usual water change , i just skim the top of the sand to get rid of any uneaten food or poop.

btw, i am using pool filter sand as my substrate. is there a better sand to use?

    thanks

No clue where the smell is coming from. Is there algae growing off your intakes or out put hoses?
I’m a neighbor also on Long Island. Why are you aging your water? Mine is great. Tap to tank with no problems.

I clean my hoses about every 4 to 6 weeks, been doing that for years, but only recently did the water start to smell. i tried the tap to tank for awhile, but having the hose coming out of my kitchen faucet was a pain. and i was concerned about all the micro bubbles coming straight out of the tap water and having to guess at temp , playing with the hot and cold faucets.. i have 2 brute trash cans in my basement that i use to age the water, i pump it from my basement into the tanks, much easier for me

Yes I get it. I added a slop sink with a sump pump to my basement.5AB355F0-C904-4072-A41E-CC82948CA27E.jpg and I just found this temperature adjuster so the water is always at 82 going into the tank35BC8274-A1BE-4114-922F-233FEC19042B.jpgand to keep the micro bubbles away I add a polishing pad to the end of the hose. 298A1A20-B53F-46E0-9C49-81C0B6B79B57.jpgWorks great.
