btw, i am using pool filter sand as my substrate. is there a better sand to use?

    thanks
I use PFS as well. I removed some to thin out my substrate layer a few weeks ago and it stunk! I use purigen in my system so no smells around the tank however.

i used an AC110 I had and put 2 purigen 100ml bags in it. the water cleared up, but the smell is still lingering, not as noticable as before tho. i am hoping the smell will eventually go away, if not completely, then at least tolerable.

It shouldn’t smell at all. Something else is going on there. I’d chase it down step by step. I noticed my PFS stunk only once I removed some and let it sit in a bucket overnight. It’s also packed full of mts. You clean the canisters regularly, right?

i clean them every 4 to 6 weeks. the smell isn't as noticeable now with AC filter being more open air than the canister filters. it's actually when I do the w/c, as the water level gets lower, the smell is more noticeable. maybe i have too sensitive a nose..lol...

Just another idea. What are you feeding your fish. I find vita-bits do stink when added to the tank. Plus some algae wafers have a bad odor.

bumping this back.. i am still having the bad smell. i changed the sand substrate, i am using activated carbon filter pads in my 3 - 2217s. could it be the glass of tank causing the odor? i scrap the algae off the glass every water change. i wipe down as much as the glass as i can each w/c. is there something different i can do to remove the odor? seeking the experts advice.

    thanks

    Jim,
I would try cutting out the Pellets. I have tried alot of pellets and some really can make the water smell badly if they sit in it too long.
