Some of the 3 inch from Miranda. My FDBW from Al arrive Monday. That should work until I find a source of BH.

Gary FDBW will definitely work fine until you find a BH Source.

Hurray! I can't help with the recipe. When I fed it it was just straight ground heart. After all, we feed all sorts of other stuff, too.

Back in the dark ages all we fed was a beef heart mix.

5 lbs beefheart cleaned with all connective tissue and grissel removed. Cut to 1/3 to 2/3 " pieces

2 lbs raw shrimp.. deshelled and cut into similar size pieces as bh

    1 tablespoon paprika
    1 tablespoon. Garlic powder
3-4 crushed and powdered one a day multi vitamins...i used mens..doesnt really matter

    1/2 cup boiled peas

2 cup quality flake.. I liked hbh seafoodlovers (jehmco.com)

1 cup cooked and chopped spinach or collard greens..press excess water out..

Mix all ingredients well and grind to ground hamburger consistency.. freeze in zip lock bags at 1/2 " thick.

Thats the main recipe.. you can add other ingredients.. fresh salmon is a good one.. cod is great as are scallops and clams...

I used to make two versions.. this was my main one the other was 50 % seafood and 50% bh... I called it"surf and turf".. i made and sold alot of these.. fish do well on it. Obviously its a homemade food and varies and you need to keep up on water changes as homemade mixes can be messy.

I read the thread on BH recipes and used them as a guide. I always say a recipe is a suggestion. BH mix is in the fridge gelling and will be put in the freezer later today. I used Knox gelatin like I did 30 years ago. The next batch I will use Agar Agar.

Ive used knox many times in the past. Its a good binder. I stopped using it because it was expensive and seemed to add more bioload to my tanks..when I used it my tank wall slimed up faster. The shrimp and flake food bound it together well without that so I stopped using it. I also didnt like the heating it up aspect to set the gel.

The Knox was expensive. Much more than I remembered. The Discus ate the BH mix very well. Better than any pellets, but they did not attack it like they do FDBW.

I used powder egg white as a binder when I had to make the BH, not only as a binder it has protein too. Well anyway I hate making BH, if I can get someone else to make it like my dog walked or a vendor I'm happy.

Is it normal for Discus to lose their appetite when being treated with Prazi and Metro? Mine are starting day three of treatment and are not eating as aggressively as normal. They ate a small cube of worms last night and are picking at BH this morning. It is usually a feeding frenzy with worms and all usually go after the BH. This morning the two smallest of the eight went to the BH and the rest held back. They are also in a tight school. Usually they school much more loosely.

Metro alone is usually not one that causes it but Prazi can and the two combined also can as they both have to be processed by the liver .. I would feed very lightly and be sure to keep on the water changes... redose after large water changes if you are dosing again. They will snap back within a few days of treatment.
