In my experience I have not seen any adverse reactions with these drugs on Corys and plecos
GM,
Does anyone know if praziquantel will kill plecos or Corys? I read the adverse reaction thread posted, but i could not find any info there.
I ask because I suspect I have tape worms in my display tank. Two ring leopards eat normally but I see they have not put any weight and have slightly sunken foreheads.
Thx
Freddy

Freddy there is always a chance meds can have unwanted side effects .. often water parameters like. PH and hardness can affect absorption.
Generally prazi is safe and prazipro should be too.
If you suspect your discus have tapewprms it might be best to treat them in a hospital tank. .. they will pass the worms in 12-48 hours after dosing with prazi. The fish can then be returned. Its unlikely they will get tapeworms again unless the tank has the tapeworms secondary host or you add that as food..
I will say though the symptoms you describe arent generally tapeworm symptoms... .. you may have other worms like capillaria. Filiing out a complete disease questionair might give us more details.

Thank you both for the fast responses. Here is some more info.
Problem
1. Please explain the problems with your fish. When did you notice the problems and did anything unusual happen that you think started them?
2 fish showing slight sunken foreheads for the last few weeks, no significant changes. Started monitoring appetite and food intake, they eat with the entire group (12 fish total, all Forrest from different purchases)
2. Symptoms (i.e. turning dark, excess slime, not eating, clamped fins, flashing, darting, clamped gills, white/yellow/green poop, hiding, headstanding or tailstanding, white on tips of fins, rotting or fungus, blisters/white zits on fish, bloated, cloudy eyes, wounds).
I have not noticed stringy poop on any of the fish, only symptom is fish unable to gain weight.
3. What medications/ treatments have you already tried and what were the results. Include dosage and duration of treatment.
None. I soak pellets in water with a couple of drops of Kent garlic extreme once a day.
Tank/Water
4. Tank size and ages, numbers and sizes of fish.
270 gallons, operating over 5 years.
12 fish 5”+, different batches from Forrest.
Ages ranges from 2 to 7+yrs
5. Water change regime (What percentage and how often).
70% 2 X wk
Aged 50%RO and 50% tap water mix
6. How long has tank been running? Is it bare bottom? If you have substrate, what type and how deep is it?
Some sand at the bottom, but less than 0.5” thick
Manzanita wood with ferns and Anubias
7. Do you age your water? If you do for how long and what is the ph swing.
Yes, over 24hrs.
i dont measure pH changes
8. What type/brand water conditioner do you use? Do you add it to the tank or aging barrel? How much do you use?
9. Parameters and water source;
Municipal water, dont measure parameters.
I use pre filter, activated carbon for all water changes + RO
Note: Water Parameters are important in diagnosing problems within a tank. If you don't own test kits for the following information, you can purchase them, test your parameters and post this info as soon as possible.
- temp 83/84F_
- ph _____
- ammonia reading ____
- nitrite reading ____
- nitrate reading ____
What type of water or combinations of water sources do you use? If it is an RO/tap/well water mix, please list percentages in the mix.
- well water ____
- municipal water __50%__
- RO water _50%___
10. Any new fish, plants or inverts added recently.
Nope
11. Please tell us what you feed your fish and how often. This can be critical information for solving the problem so be as specific as you can.
4+ frozen cubes of San Francisco Bay beef heart, brine shrimp with spirullin and discus formula daily
Omega One cichlid pellets 2 daily
12. Include any pictures or videos you have which shows the symptoms. If you can't add them to this post, please provide a link to them.
I will it a try when light turn on later today.
I agree that the problem is more likely due to capillaria than tapes. Levamisole and Absolute Wormer both work well.
Mama Bear
Forgot to mention.… my thought is to treat the entire tank because if two fish have it everyone else too (likely).
Thx, Liz. If I use Levamisole, is it safe for plecos and Cory’s?
I think I've used it with plecos in the tank and had no problem. I don't see why it would bother cory's either. Someone else may know for sure.
Mama Bear
Can you post some pics of the fish..both healthy ones and the two sick ones.
.Its hard to say for sure here but diet may be part of the problem.. I would try increase the amount of food as you maybe under feeding them. Try adding more nutritious foods too... if they like brine shrimp see if you can get them to eat frozen mysis. And instead of the san fran beefheart, maybe try a homemade mix ?11. The problem with under feeding is it takes awhile for the effects to show and if anyfish are the underdogs in the tank the healthier fish take the Lions share.
How is the appetite of the sick fish and healthy fish?

Thanks, i will try to snap good pictures. Interesting fact, older fish (4+ yrs) are not showing any signs. These 2 leopards are the most recent purchase, over 1 year ago. So, comparing to other fish in my tank leopards have a more slim look border line to sick I would say.
As for appetite, they eat as good if not better than other fish. They devour pellets as well as frozen food, no picky eaters at all.
I attached a video of when i got them, let me try to get one video today.
Lights are on now. Few pictures of my fish other than leopards.

I think whatever is going on is affecting all the fish.. even the pigeons look thin to me.. I do think levamisole is a good idea and I would look close at feeding more and trying to include foods with more nutrition.

Thank you for all the help, it might the photo angle for the pigeons. Other fish have a thick forehead, but i was going to medicate them all anyways.
Will levamisole treat both Round and tape worms? If not, why the preference over prazi? Just for my personal Education.
Also, will levamisole affect plecos and Cory’s? Asking because Flubendazole will affect them and it is the only thing i have been able to find.
Any recommendations on where to purchase levamisole?
