    Default Stupid pair grew brains

Finally! These guys had a nice batch of wigglers living in the pitcher. Last time the parents showed no interest in their wigglers so I gave them to another pair to foster. This time, the parents did notice their kids so when they went free swimming I poured them in with mom and dad. The parents went to hunting them and scarfing them immediately. But when enough kids were able to escape the hungry mouths and attach it was like a light bulb went off and the pair suddenly realized what it was all about.

We're not out of the woods yet, of course. But today is day 2 and mom and dad are still carrying their kids around on their backs.

Thats interesting Liz.. usually they would not stop eating them once they started. I wonder if it was a panic response..like "oh no" the babies are in trouble..better catch them and protect them... then gulp! Uh oh... My pea brain forgot they were family not food!

I've seen mine try and catch the wigglers with their mouths when they first start going free swimming and spit them back at the cone ..its kind of comical as so many start leaving the cone that parents give up. I'm sure a few get swallowed in the process.

Hopefully your pair continues parenting properly!

Congrats, Liz! Hoping for continued success! Good thing the babies hadn't been eating garlic or there might not be any left.

Did you ever have a large batch of wrigglers and wonder why only so few survivors, there is a reason.

    Liz, there a couple reasons:
    1. Some breeders feel that breeding pairs only want to care for a certain number of fry.
    2. Breeders feel that the mated pair will cull out deform or dead wrigglers. Reason for culling are
    1. Weak spawn, I notice that the wrigglers are not very active, results are lost of whole batch.
    2. Sliders, difficult for the pair to cull leaving the breeder to sort out later.
    3. Non-stick of lack of adhesive gland, these are wrigglers that the mostly likely see the pairs spit back on the spawning cone.
    4. Non clumping or no clustering of wrigglers they end up dead if not culled out by the pair.
    5. Lack of spinal or bent spine, they kind of looked like check mark, some say this might be the results of too much current.
    6. Last the pair may only want to care for a limited number of fry.

The breeding pairs have their work cut out, next the breeders will do the final culling before selling.

Liz, good thing for you, but I raise the fry artificially so all the culling are done by me. All the pairs need to do is just spawn its
almost instant babies, no stress. Some spawns are small even with very fertile pairs after culling but next week comes another spawn, again and again.

I've already decided that it was more work than I was willing to do. I would only do it if I was desperate and nothing else worked. I get a rush watching the way it works naturally. Besides, I don't want to just crank them out. It's a hobby, after all. It's job is to make me happy.

Is the young pair still raising the children or did they eat them?
