Take it down to under 90. That works for almost everyone.
Hello! So I ended up buying a discus breeding pair from hans. It was my favorite strain and I have extra space, so I just went for it. Thing is, I'm needing some help with my water.
It's hard which I know means the eggs can't hatch. 7.8 PH, 10 dGH, 15 dKH, 450 TDS.
My question is, what level should I try and get it down to? Or do I go for the pitcher method? Not sure what is best for a beginner breeder.
Not expecting much success, but it's something I've always wanted to try.
Thanks.

Perfect! Easy enough. As far as tank size goes, will a 40 breeder suffice? I can go a bit larger to 55 or 75. Would remove the parents once it's time and grow out fry in there. Thinking I would have to section off part of the tank to help the fry find the parents.
A 40 breeder is a little shallow for a breeding pair. A 29 is what you need.

Thanks Liz and Brian. I went to my fish store and found a used 44 gallon. Odd gallonage, but same height as a 29 with extra length and width. So that will be my plan. The pair is a F2 Batata Red. Can't wait to show them to you guys, they are gorgeous.
That tank size sounds great. Please post a pic of the pair!

Here are my new fish! I am so pleased with them. Hans really gave me some beautiful fish. The first two photos are them in natural light 5 minutes out of the bag. For some reason, my camera makes the photos look blue . It washes them out in the photos, but wow are they pretty. I will have to get some more photos tomorrow in the sunlight. TDS is around 95

Here is a little video I took. Still need to get them with some natural light! https://streamable.com/0aqlia

They look wonderful! Hans is great as well!
Best of luck!
Thanks Jacob. Hans really is a great guy to work with. Here is a picture of the pair this morning.

Well that was fast... sorry for the flipped pictures. 20230209_153510.jpg20230209_153507.jpg
I seem to be loosing wrigglers every day. I can watch some fly off the cone, parents reattach, and then they fly off again and never come back. Is this just something new pairs will struggle with for awhile? I don't have the tank painted white either, so I'm not sure if that would help. I'm down to probably around 15 wrigglers, so not sure if this batch will make it.
If you have not tried it, lower (or turn off the aquarium lights) for a few weeks until the fry permanently attach. I had the same problem, turned off the lights and only used room lights. A possible solution.
Patience. It takes 10 - 15 tries before parents get the knack of spawning.
At my age, everything is irritating.
