Is your water fit enough for fish, to by-pass the softener? You must have same organic matter in you water to turn cloudy after sitting a few days is my thought. I would think if tap water is not fit for human consumption; it would not be ideal for discus. Have your ever considered a RO unit?

Our untreated water here from the tap is good. We just didn't want to raise the kids drinking all that chlorine, and we love the benefits of the softener.
For the ultimate health benefits, we drink only filtered water.
Yeah, hopefully the water experts at the county can tell me if there's organic matter in there.
You know, that was treated water I tested. I should test straight tap water for clarity after 3 days. I'll do that.

    Good news.
This tank is now really, really clear. It looks really good. I appreciate the ideas and thoughts.

I do need to look into an RO unit.
