Default Need to identify this growth on tank wood

I just had this wood out 2 months ago to give it a scrub-down of green algae.
I noticed this gray stuff growing slowly and hit it with a toothbrush last week and it seems like I fertilized it because it's proliferating quickly.
(One thing about wood, it collects food in the top. I blow it out with a turkey baster. There's no controlling where the food falls.)
What is it, how do I control it?
    Thanks in advance.

Looks more like hair algae/bush algae/black beard algae rather than slime that can coat new wood. Usually caused by high phosphates and nitrites. Siamese Algae eaters or Ramshorn snails will eat it naturally. Or take it out and spray with H2O2. It will come back with the same maintenance/or source of nutrients.

Looks like your substrate could be a source of nutrients and should be used in a well planted tanks.

I really cant see the image clear enough here Greg but my first thought when I saw it was hydra.

Okay, I'll do some maintenance and testing and see what I learn. The article gives an easy test to confirm hydra. I have a phosphate kit also, but I've WAY upped my WC's in the discus tank so I hope that's not it.
Substrate is 1" deep but gets vacuumed regularly - never had this problem. Thanks.

Okay, so tested for hydra as the article indicated by touching it to see if it quickly flinches and curls into a ball. Was not hydra, must be some type of algae.
Brushed and hit with H2O2 today. First time seeing it, we'll see if it comes back.
    Thanks. Learning all the time.
    That hose bib is dechlorinated.
