Eastern State Penitentiary

While in Philadelphia we visited Eastern State Penitentiary,, and wiki "Designed by John Haviland and opened on October 25, 1829, Eastern State is considered to be the world's first true penitentiary. Eastern State's revolutionary system of incarceration, dubbed the "Pennsylvania system" or separate system, encouraged separate confinement as a form of rehabilitation. The warden was legally required to visit every inmate every day, and the overseers were mandated to see each inmate three times a day." Al Capone spent some time there and his cell has been restored to how it was...the guy had the equivalent of a prison penthouse... nice bed, writing desk and chair, and even music!

This old Prison is thought to be one the most haunted places you can visit. They even do Halloween events and many Ghost hunting shows have featured them..My favorite is done by Buzzfeed unsolved Ryan and Shane as these guys are just funny. I was really looking forward to the opportunity to photograph the various structures and it did not disappoint. My family took the audio tour where you wear head phones and walk around , I ditched mine and went into full photo mode. Still It was challenging to photo well. The light there is really not great in most places and you are limited to how you can move about. I don't like using flash but it would have been helpful in some scenes. Next time I visit I will have a better idea of what to expect.

This image is kind of cool. I thought I was being creative when I took it and was so happy I showed my wife. Carrie laughed and showed me the refrigerator magnet she just bought in the gift shop...It was the same image!

Thanks Pat, no that one is just a regular cell thats been re-done. Al Capone's cell was more lavish...

I only had minute to take this , as you can guess its tourist hot spot and the door is so small like all the other cells that only one person at a time can really stand infront of the opening.

Theres a death ledger listing over 1000 deaths there... some of the listings as to cause are ... well.. unusual.. others are typical for the time like tuberculosis...

Between deaths and torture its understandable why this place may be haunted if any place is.
