    Default Biological media

    Hi All,
I’m finally biting the bullet and upgrading my tank to a 150 gal 5x2x2. We are getting wood floors where the tank will live. The flooring installers told me ti give the wood 2 weeks to cure and harden before I put the tank on the new flooring.

My issue is I have a sump full of seachem matrix from my 2 year old discus tank full of beneficial bacteria. I was planning to put the matrix in a brute trash can with my aquarium water. Would the BB die without a nitrate source for 2 weeks in 2 weeks of stagnant water?

My discus will be in 2 40 gal breeders with sponge filters. Could I just use the poop filled water and add it to the brute as a nitrate source? Do I need an air stone in the brute?

    Appreciate the advice as always.

    Mike

Well you could just use the sump to continue feeding the 40g. I have dc pumps. If you have one just lower the flow rate to keep the water flowing. Again with a dcpumpyou could also just add a sponge toot to continue filtering and moving the water. Some bb will starve if not fed but you shouldn’t lose it all. Also it’s not looking for a nitrate source but an ammonia source .

I keep my sponge filters alive in a 20 gallon tank and I feed ammonia every day to keep the cycle and if I need a quick setup I have ready filters. A stone to keep aerating is a must. I test all the time for Ammonia and nitrate and once.

This is a great way to keep bio going strong.

Mike if you use this method be sure to purchase clear ammonia..no detergent added. I get mine at the regular grocery store here.

Thank Tom et al. I had ammonia that I used for a fishless cycle, but I probably don't have it anymore.
