    Default Prazi

Is it normal for Discus to lose their appetite when treated with Prazi? Mine are on day two of a planned five day treatment for flukes and are not eating well today. I am planning on treating them with Formalin when it arrives on Wednesday and decided to use the Prazi until I can treat them with Formalin.

The formalin arrived on Monday. I did a 75% water change Monday afternoon and started the formalin treatment. By Tuesday morning they looked better and were eating normally. My plan is to continue the formalin today and stop treatment tomorrow. I have seen no evidence of flukes since Monday night. No more closed gills or scraping on airlines. Their coloration has also improved.

Gary, glad to hear it. One suggestion is to repeat this un a few days to catch anything that survived or hatching eggs.

That is the plan. How many days between treatments do you suggest?

For gill flukes, multiple treatments are needed , Day 1, Day 4 and Day 8.Gill flukes reproduce by laying eggs, and like most parasites, their eggs are immune medications. This means that the first treatment will only kill the adult and juvenile flukes, but not the eggs. The second treatment is needed, usually after 4 or 5 days, to kill next generation of flukes once they hatch.

Its a bit hard to nail down why some fish lose their appetite with meds and others don't. I'm of the opinion that it may come down to different water parameters. Water hardness, alkalinity and pH can all affect absorption potentially.
