    Default Tank for aging water

    So what do you use?

I am in need of a tank to age water. Lowes has a 500 gal potable water tank that I would love to have, but it is over my budget at $850. I know I should just get an IBC tote or two. The Lowes tank would fit better, be easier to insulate, and look better.

Here is a link for the tank at Lowes: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Snyder-Indu...ank/5002004915

Looks like the price has gone up.

Any suggestions for a tank that would work for me?

I’m in the same boat! I was thinking since my biggest tank is 75 gallons I could get away with a 100 gallon “rain barrel” with a wave maker/bubbler and a heater hanging in the middle. My only issue is storing it outdoors in the winter will not be easy.

Would love to know what you find out though.

I have occasionally seen used water storage containers on Craig's List, often in the farm equipment section. But it'd be simple enough to search for these terms across the entire For Sale section.

I agree with Willie. Check craigslist or facebook market place and you will find a lot of these water storage containers for dirt cheap. I can't personally advise on how safe it is if the storage container was not used for water though.

Depending on the space and needs maybe consider cinderblocks and pond liner ... I had a friend who went that route.. I think it cost him under $100 for several hundred gallons... another friend made one out of lumber and pond liner. These were not pretty but very functional.

When you find IBC totes and/or drums listed, be sure to chose the ones which are food grade. Ones used to store chemicals should be avoided.

There is a salvage store near here that has IBC totes that contained Coke syrup for $50. They would work but are not what I really want.

You can get them refurbished. There's a place near me that sells surplus food-grade 275 and 300 gallon totes for $155.

I have always wondered how people with the IBC Totes get them in there without building a room around them.
I have an about 70 gallon barrel that had pickles formerly. There's a repurposing place locally that sells them cheap. Works great. Then a 32 gallon Brute trash can that I rotate RO and regular water through as needed. I need to get another bigger barrel, that would be helpful. I have also been thinking about a small, gas fired on demand water heater just for fish. I think one of the BTUs that I would need is less than $200. Just don't know if it would eliminate my need to age water. Would be amazing to be able to just use warm tap water.

I all depends how much aged water you need I use two 55 gallon open top barrels. I mix my RO and heat. I pump to each tank via 3/4 inch pvc pipe. I can do a 24 hr. aging with a circulating pump and air stone.

Nice setup, Chuck. What are the drums insulated with? I am still lusting after the tank at Lowes. If I can negotiate a better price on the one with a missing top at the local Lowes, it might be in the budget.

Getting it or IBC totes in the basement is not a problem. The basement has a garage door. Getting them past the clutter is another thing.

It's hard to turn away from something you lust after. I know all about it. I was never one to deny my desires.
