Default So what exactly do we call it?

Just curious but what exactly is a tank with potted aquarium plants called? Its not really a " planted" tank in the conventional sense. .. because the tanks not planted the pots are.

Its almost like a "aquatic greenhouse" for discus .

Sure would be easier if we had a word like "planted tank" or "biotope" etc to describe a tank with potted plants.

Thoughts? I dont know may theres already a name for it?

Well since no other fish keepers do it. I’d guess a discus tank would work .

The term "biotope" always bothered me when used to describe planted discus tanks. Discus live in biomes with zero plants - as every video of wild discus would illustrate. So a discus "biotope" tank should consist of a mud bottom and dead sticks.

A discus tank like Tom mentioned, since it's not a planted tank. Some folks like a pink or blue colored substrate that also can be called a discus tank. So many different things you can put in a fish tank; seems to be something for every ones taste. I've tried the pots before but didn't like the looks of them.

I find it easy to clean but you get to a point you are constantly cleanings since the the black poop stands out with the white bottom. But I still like the minimalistic look. I do have two tanks with black substrate with a mix of pots and planted plus the BB.

Willie I’m with you 100%! BUT these fish are so removed from the wild their natural habitat is huge vats in Asia . Plus even if there was some sort of remembrance of the Amazon we both know there’s no beef heart floating around for them to eat!! .

Just so everyone knows, I'm not anti-plants. I kept lots of potted plants with my discus for years. I've stopped recently because of a snail infestation. (I am anti snail.)

My disdain toward the term 'biotype' is that it's unscientific. For example, I see many altum angelfish 'biotype' tanks with giant Vallisneria in the background. It's a beautiful combination, but Vals grow on every continent except Antartica and South America. It's a planted tank, not a biotype tank.

    Okay, a little OCD...

Jason, this just really illustrates the importance of Prenuptial agreements. It is really important to protect your fish keeping rights from day one in a relationship.
