Thanks for the comments Scott, we were lucky to have a good specialist relatively close by, and were able to take all of the fish from one of his tanks. We love how they all compliment each other but are a little different to each other too. The aqua scape had more wood initially, but we soon learnt that the Discus preferred it a little more open, and we raised the height of the wood to give them some cover but to also keep the floorspace open. The plants are growing out quite nicely. We're happy so far!

You know you're doing something right when they spawn in a tank for you without intervention. Is that a solo fish laying eggs or is the other just out of sight?

It's funny how it all makes sense - 20/20 hindsight and all that...

The female had been getting quite boisterous with the others over the last few days, but I didn't really think anything of it. I didn't at that point even realise she was a she. Then yesterday I noticed the pair of them hanging around together and later, noticed her vent, then his. I assumed that nothing would come of it, but decided to bring the water change forward and so was making a mess, picking out a few snails, vacuuming the sand, last job was to use a baster to pull out some uneaten food from next to the rock she'd been hovering around. With my hand in with her, I looked through the tank to check I was in the right place when I noticed that she was laying!!!!

I stopped and just watched - and for the next hour she laid approximately 100 eggs. 'Dad' was with her the whole time but this is the first time they've spawned and he obviously hadn't read the handbook. By morning the eggs had gone.

However I'll take even that as a win - to have them happy enough to spawn, and to have paired is fantastic. I'll keep up the maintenance, feed them up and hope for another spawn in the future.

Hi Mark,
It would be , but I have to forewarn you, that pairing is not really an ideal one, all the more so since these are stendkers. The reason being, stendker Pigeons are about as true a pigeon blood as you can get. Which means the potential for peppering/dirty fry when crossed to non-pigeons is greatly increased. In Alot of the Asian lines, the pigeons have been outcrossed to minimize the pepper, usually with goldens,. Even so any Pigeon derived fish when crossed to non-pigeons can be a real random outcome as far as peppering goes. No way to know though until they raise fry. I have seen some remarkably clean pbX non-Pb crosses... but likewise I have seen some really dirty offspring.

Good luck with that! I find discus to be extremely head strong. I have had countless conversations with mine and they just do not do what I tell them.
