    Default Duckweed reservoir

I have a 20 gal crayfish tank on the bottom of a rack.. I wanted duckweed in it but I also wanted to use a hang on the back aquaclear. The problem is the aquaclear sinks all the duckweed... a foam divider fixed the issue.. the flow of the filter does still move the duckweed but it doesnt submerge. This has been running a few weeks now.

Im sure you could do the same with a nice piece of glass or acrylic for a more finished look. But it works with foam and meets my needs for a non-display tank.

Have to hand it to you Al, you're one brave soul keeping duckweed. In my experience, if it's in one tank, it'll be in all of them eventually!

I like the benefits of it..It grows fast and really sucks up waste.. I don't like how it takes over tanks but I have a few ideas there to explore. What I really like about it is ,its a nutritious treat for my Chickens

And in winter this is huge as they crave greens.

I can also add it to my red footed tortoises diets.

So for me, if I can utilize duck weed in my tanks it just really makes good sense.

I don't like to even think about how many weeks of work it took for me to rid my tanks of duckweed. YOu are a brave man, Al. For me...never again! If I want floating plants I'll go with dwarf water lettuce.

Was it causing a problem Liz? or just didn't look good? I know its a pita when doing big water changes as it kind of sticks to everything.

I think the main issue that most of us don't want anything to do with duckweed is it takes over everything and a pita to get rid of it. Al that's very true that it is a nitrate eating machine but it just gets every where and blocks out a lot of the light getting into the tanks. Reminds me of a flower bed at the house that I have a very bad problem with weeds, there hasn't been anything I put in there to get rid of them.

exactly, and for my axolotl tanks and crayfish tank its perfect because of that, shrimp seem to like it too,, They walk all over the roots upside down. I wouldn't put in my discus tanks as I just move too much water there but in some of my tanks I think it works well.

Just wait, It will find its way into your Discus tanks unless you use completely different equipment on them.

Thanks a lot, Al. I have been duckweed free for months after thinking I had gotten rid of it multiple times. I saw your picture and not only do I have PTSD, but I now also have duckweed in my tanks again. It's that catching.

Dwarf water lettuce is much better, IMO. You can actually remove it if you want.

You guys are cracking me up I had not realized how Terrorizing Duckweed was.Maybe I should rethink it and go with a modified hydroponic system and grow iceberg lettuce.

It's too late now. Your neighbors will be finding duckweed in their toilets soon. You'll take a drink in the dark and have to chew the water. I give it six months before we're going to forum.simplyduckweed.com

Actually, not sure if you guys know this but..

    https://modernfarmer.com/2017/01/sci...ting-duckweed/.

    .
Many varieties of duckweed are also edible, and even, as a new study from German and Indian scientists reveals, are so packed full of nutrients we’re pretty sure we’ll be seeing the word “superfood” associated with the plant. This study examined one particular species of duckweed, Wolffia globosa, and found that it has a similar protein content to soybeans and peas, and that it contains significant levels of omega-3 fatty acids.

    ...

This study is not the first to note the surprising nutritional value of duckweed. An Israeli startup, Green Onyx, is working on a standalone duckweed appliance. Green Onyx looks sort of like an espresso machine, and grows another species of duckweed, Wolffia arrhiza, right on your counter. This particular type of duckweed is among the smallest plants in the world; it looks like green couscous, and if you swipe your hand through a pond of it, your fingertips will come away covered in hundreds of individual tiny plants.

Duckweed is not grown commercially in any real sense, though it is sometimes harvested and eaten in Southeast Asia (it’s usually cooked into omelettes or soup). But Green Onyx thinks it has real potential: fast-growing, with a spectacular nutritive makeup, it has a mild green flavor, somewhere in the neighborhood of spinach, and could conceivably be used in any number of applications. Smoothies? Sure. But also pesto, purees like saag, or simply placed onto a dish like a beautiful green caviar.
