The sickest fish aren't eating. They are itching themselves, huddling and are dark. Really sickly. For the nitrofurazone believers- is furazone from Jeffers where people get it from? Can anyone provide dosing since it's intended for horses? The same for the prohibit levamisole from them?
Thank you!
Mike

Antibiotics, in and of themselves, do not cure a fish. Antibiotics merely control the population growth of bacteria in a fish long enough for its immune system to eliminate them.
nitrofurazone
* 100mg / litre for 30 minutes
* 10mg/litre for 6 – 12 hours
* 2mg/litre prolonged immersion for 5 – 10 days

The nitrofurans, including nitrofurantoin, nitrofurazone, furanace, and furazolidone, are commonly used in the ornamental fish trade, but the FDA strictly forbids their use by producers of food fish. Nitrofurazone is specifically categorized as 'of high regulatory concern' by the FDA and should not be present at any facility where food species are raised.
Although nitrofurans are commonly used in bath treatments, they are probably most effective against superficial infections and, in at least one study, nitrofurazone was not readily absorbed into the body of either gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) or tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) in experimental trials (Colorni and Paperna 1983). Within the group, furanace appears to be the most effective for use in bath treatments.
To achieve the most effective result when using a nitrofuran in a bath treatment, either some sort of cover or a darkened treatment location should be considered, as the nitrofurans can be inactivated by light. Nitrofurans as oral treatments may not be as effective as previously believed, although the proper pharmacokinetic research needs to be performed to verify this conclusion.

Thanks Francis- some antibiotics are cidal vs static.

Thanks All. I ended up ordering the nitrofurazone from American Aquarium. Apparently it's more concentrated- 5 g treats up to 125 gal? https://www.americanaquariumproducts...ofurazone.html
Hi Mike , yes lowering temps will slow bacteria growth.... and doing large water changes is hard in this modern life....
Looking into auto water changing....is there any posts?.
keep as posted.....I need to learn....and your fish need to be happy again.

Many times its possible to use far less medication and water if you can drop the water level. Depends on the filtration but its far easier to treat a 90 gal than 180 gal....it allows you to change more water and use less medicine..

The one you ordered has acriflavine in it. Should be a great choice.
Thanks All- I paid for quicker shipping but they haven't even packaged it yet! I'll continue with the bactocide 1 until the nitrofurazone comes. My largest blue Turq about 8 inches recovered but the others are struggling. Some got better, some got worse.
Al- I could lower the water level but I have a sump and it won't circulate without having a full tank.... I suppose I could throw in some sponge filters. I have an airstone in the sump that I could put in the main tank. I added 9 cups of salt to my tank ~1 tablespoon per gallon. 9.5 cups of salt was quite a bit. My oldest said, "Dad, aren't they freshwater"... Do people use non-iodized salt from a supermarket? I can't afford the API salt...
Hi Mike,
Yes, I use non iodized salt from the supermarket.
API salt is essentially the same.

I use Kosher Salt from the supermarket.

Cheapest salt you can buy... ideally dosing is by weight with the salt so even water softener salt (sodium not potassium) will work if weighed properly. The Tablespoon method is for grocery store table salt/kosher salt as an ok estimate. Probably doesnt matter if its iodized but I just use non-iodized

Thanks all- I may get the cheapest one stuff I can find. As a Jew- kosher salt is appealing but too expensive (:
