IF You Had a Choice.

Hi Gang, as you may know I,m setting up again with Wilds this time after 20 years dreaming....as we have now quite alot of ways to sex discus after a certain age?.......if you had a choice what fish would you have...

Would you have All Males? All Females? 5 males and 1 female? 4 males and 2 females? 3 females and 3 males?.

Would love your thoughts as you have more expertise than me.

Please keep comments clean as there is too much used in this day and age.......!!!.

Matt it depends on your goals. If you want a tank with no breeding and just for show I think your best bet is a tank of all Males.

If you want to breed them 2 males and 4 females is what I would do.. For me thats alway my goal so that would be my ideal ratio in this scenario.

Sounds like a plain....all Males would look nice ...bigger ...wider...a pointy fins....but it would be amazing to breed in the future as maybe a retirement income ?....I went to someone who did this intill he was too old to do himself, this was along time ago now.He had some amazing show fish and some rare wild Heckel,s he was trying to breed.

Have maybe 5 discus books to read but information has moved on now....

Females seem to have a thin top lip (Alum Angel fish look), smaller thinner Pelvic fin, rounded Caudal,anal,Dorsal fin,s, smaller ,thinner in shape and look nicer?.

But maybe not as round as a male.

You will find more practical and useful knowledge on this forum than most of the books out there. There are some very good books though that are still well worth reading.

My tanks have always been mixed. Even now I couldn’t tell the difference from male to female. I’ve just bought fish I liked. Many have bred in my tanks. Left alone they eat the eggs and everything stays the same. You’ll realize your pairs and if you want to breed you can then remove them. Good luck!
