    Default Father Fish... Sticky....

    Hi Team, Happy Christmas......

What are your thoughts on Father Fish.....and maybe Discus?

He seems to be taking the Aquatic world too the next level with what seems a very natural why to keep small fish and plants ,

Adding dirt and old leaf mulm to the Aquarium.

But would his method work with discus....????

    Questions too ask yourself...

    1. Are we feeding toooo much....( wrong foods)....quote...A Hungry fish is a healthy fish.
    2. Are we making the tanks so sterile......
3.Are we breeding fish in sterile water so they have a poor or low immune system.
    4. Is the balance wrong.
    5. Should we allow nature to help itself in the tank.
    6. Why do we use so much medication in the Discus hobby!!!!!?????.

Do we need to look at the natural water world to look after our Discus.

Also what is Sticky??? I.m getting Older myself☺.

There are so many ways to keep fish... some work great for a short time some work great long term. I dont do hypotheticals well here especially from someone I have never heard about.. and no.. I didnt watch the videos.. my tolerance level for the look at me..see me ...listen to me videos is less and less the older I get.

I can only tell you this. .. after decades of keeping discus I have found what works best for discus for me. How do i qualify that? Rarely use meds, rarely lose fish... fish breed .. fish grow and most of my discus live years longer than the few years the hobby generally gets out of them. I wouldnt change a thing I do here or that I advise Because someone on youtube says I should.

Social media information can be really good or really bad..it can also look and sound really good and be absolute rubbish.

99.9999 % of hobbyists discus problems are usually traceable back poor or no qt.. poor choice of starting stock.. poor choice of foods.. and poor choice of information.

I'm by no means an expert, so who cares what I have to say. But I think you'll find that the people who are best at waving their arms and claiming discus are "just like every other fish" often, unsurprisingly, do not keep discus.
There are certainly some fish and applications where a tank that is more like a really small pond could be a benefit. But the father fish message resonates with people first and foremost because he's telling them what they want to hear, which is "be lazy". Anyone can take a video of an aquarium and claim it hasn't had a water change in 20 years.

Many people set up Discus tanks in ways that are not going to allow the discus to thrive. They show a pic .. and make claims... but you never see documentation on how long the fish lived. Usually the person just disappears. Sometimes theres a problem to be used as a scape goat...most of the time the tank is a revolving door. Discus enter live and exit dead.

Dirtied tanks will work, not over stocked with fish is best; some even without filters, but not for discus long term or short term. Dirtied tanks are better for plants.

I agree 100% with what Al had to say period. I too would love someone to set up a "Father Who" tank with discus and update us all after a year with the results???

Yes, I think this is what's "lost in the sauce". The problem is people hear what they want to hear and assume that you can paint everything under the sun with the same brush.

That’s it in a nutshell!! FF is telling people who really don’t want to do much that that’s great. He’s reached his audience! The pond guru told all his media would greatly reduce nitrate. Put it in every crevice of every filter. Did it? No it didn’t and doesn’t. But he’s a millionaire!

As a 68-year-old, I can assure you that age has zero correlation with knowing anything. I've watched one of his videos and realized that this guy knows far less than many other fish keepers. Of course you can keep fish alive without doing water changes. I've seen some many local hobbyists who keep stunted and diseased discus.

Keeping quality discus is a science, not an art. What works is based on chemistry and biology, not on some special skill.
At my age, everything is irritating.
