Default Is my tank compromised? Scratch/chip on interior bottom corner

    20231230_140515.jpg

Hi everyone, long time since I've been on here. I've had to reseal my 150 gallon tank (long story) and found a chip/scratch below the silicone in a bottom interior corner. I'm 95% sure this was there before I started removing the silicone as I started to hear the sound of glass scraping along the razor blade as I was removing silicone from this corner. It is about 1/2 inch long by 1/4 inch tall and shallow. My fingernail can catch on it.

I'm freaking out a little as I'm wondering if the structural integrity of my tank is compromised. Is this thing a lost cause, or would I be okay cleaning it up and applying new silicone on it? Really don't want 150 gallons of water on my floor.

    Thank you in advance!

Second pic isn’t coming through. Was the silicone you removed the original? From experience it’s no fun when all that water hits the floor! Lost a 200g to a crack. Maybe others know better. For me that’s a hard nope!!

It was removed before. I paid a guy who reseals tanks locally to reseal it and while he did an okay job, he revealed he did not use acetone or alcohol to remove the previous silicone layer so I really did not trust that the tank would hold lomg term. I'm doing it myself now and wondering if he chipped it while working on it and failed to tell me.

It could have always been there. I have seen new tanks with similar divits and chips that the factory just siliconed over. Is it ideal.. no. But its a hard call if its going to be a weak spot. If you have any doubts best not to use it..

I would probably personally use it in my basement.. not in my livingroom.

If it is a smooth chip I would use it. If it has a scratch, known as a stress riser, I would not.

There is definitely a scratch. I'll get rid of this thing.

    Thank you!

Why wouldn't he clean the seams with acetone or alcohol before resealing?

He said they leave residue which prevent the silicone from sticking, but it sounds like he doesn't give it time to evaporate before applying silicone. Oh well!

Tough call but any resealed tank is a tough call for me because I failed at my only attempt. I'm with Al, basement yes living room or hardwoods no, but not so much because of the crack but because it's a reseal

Put it in the basement if you have one or sell it for reptile use

Don't have a basement, this is for my home office which has new wood floors and also houses my guitars and work computer. Definitely just going to go with a new tank at this point and CL this with the disclaimer that it is chipped.

Just ordered a new 150 gallon from the LFS. Apparently they are discontinued so they are clearing them out. Paid $600 for a new tank and have a potential buyer for the suspect one for $200. Net $400 for a brand new tank and peace of mind is pretty good in my opinion!
