No problem Mike, we all learn new things every day no matter how long you have had discus for. That's what keep this hobby interesting.

A discus tank doesn't have to be boring. Anubias are terrific plants to put in a discus tank. A few pieces of driftwood and voila, lol. You do have to make sure your tank is big enough so that they can swim freely if they choose to so I have all my plants in the back of the tank.

I recently saw a guy cover the bottom of his tank with a couple large ceramic tiles, cut to fit. He chose a neutral tan color, which I thought looked pretty good. It definitely looked much better than bare glass, but was just as easy to clean.


Nobody uses underground filters anymore, but I have had good luck with plants in gravel with an underground filter. You can connect the lift tubes to a pump to increase water flow through the gravel, either up or down flow. Small pebbles might give you a nice look, while being easier to keep clean than gravel.

According to Dr. Novak using an underground filter, aka plenum is the ideal way to go, Anoxic Filtration. I tried it once and it didn't turn the way people claimed.
