Default should I really get pairs of strain instead of ones?

Does it really matter all that much??

I just got my 55 gallon setup going in my living room. was planning on starting with 5/6 3 " discus bare bottom.

I read somewhere that getting pairs will help them be less stressed.. is this true? does it matter all tat much?

I am limited in space and dont envision getting another tank. am I better off getting pairs or ones of each.

For display purposeless only it doesn’t matter mate. Buy the strains you wish to enjoy watching grow. Pairs create territories which in turn increases aggression. With 5-6 juvenile grow outs you will no doubt end up with pairs anyway and have to deal the ensuing aggression in a 55gal tank.

I guess it doesn’t matter. When you say pair do you mean male/female or just 2 of the same. I like to get 2 of the same. But that could be 2 different types of reds, blues or pigeons. Now you’ve got 6 different discus but 2 of each share a color. But Ts up to you. Discus at the 3” size will need daily water changes till 4.5-5” and lots of food. But they are fun to grow out.

will they pair with each other based on their coloration compared to each other ? like will two yellows pair off and two blues etc

No, Discus dont really care what color a potential mate is.

If you just want a display tank then strain doesn't matter. If you want to breed some then I would get several of the same strain, or at least different strains that pair well. Groups of 6 or more is best to help spread aggression. If you're going to use a 55g then I would suggest no more than 6 or possibly 7 in order to maintain water quality.

Very true Brian you beat me to the punch on that one, if you would like to breed down the road instead of having a display tank of different colors and strains then I would stick with all discus of the same color and strain.
