    Default Nitrofurazone dosage

I have determined that I need to dose 400 mg Nitrofurazone in my 55 gallon tank. The problem is I have no way to weigh 400 mg. Any idea how much this would be by volume? Also how many days do you treat with Nitrofurazone?

I this is the wrong dosage, please let me know.

Gary you really should invest in a gram scale.. $10 on amazon.

However.. 1 level unpacked 1/4 tsp measuring spoon is about 500 mg.

How long to treat is going to depend on what you are treating. Generally 7 -10day is used. Caution... it will trash your biofilter.

Thanks for jogging my memory. I just had to go shopping in the basement and found the scale I used years ago to weigh model parts.

I think two 2/3 water changes per day will control ammonia.

That’s quite low dosage for nitrofurazone 400 mg for 55 gallons. Usually 378 mg per 10 gallons for 6–12 hours,

    repeat daily for 10 days.

I got dosage from this thread: https://forum.simplydiscus.com/showt...urazone+dosage

    It had this link: https://fishdoc.co.uk/antibiotic-bat...al-infections/

I used the 2mg/L. Did I screw up the math?

Both methods should work from fishdoc.co.uk and University of Florida. the dosage depends either a short tern bath or prolonged bath. Higher dosage for short term bath.

Sometimes the antibiotic dosage is confusing.

    Description
    Nitrofurazone Powder

Fish Disease Diagnosis: A good disinfectant for clearing water prior to newly arrived fish. Effective against marine ulcer disease and protozoans. Also useful in treating furunculosis found in Koi.

Fish Disease Treatment: 1/4 teaspoon per 30 gallons. 250 grams (treats approx. 4000 gallons) Treat every 24 hours with a 25% water change before each treatment. Treat for 10 days.

    API Furan 2

Active ingredient: 85 mg Nitrofurazone per packet.

For best results, remove filter media and continue aeration

For each 10 gallons of water, empty one packet directly into aquarium.

Repeat dose after 24 hours. Wait another 24 hours then change 25% of the aquarium water.

Repeat this treatment for a second time, for a total of 4 doses.

Then male a final 25% water change and add fresh filter media.

Treatment may be repeated, if necessary.

    Thanks, Francis.

That Furan II dosage is right in line with my 400 mg for a 55. I will continue with the 400 mg dosage for a week.

There are some stipulations/rules when medicating fish that need to be addressed.

    1. Never, EVER throw any medication into a tank without the advice of an experienced user. Shotgun medicating does more harm then good.

    2. It’s better to get more than one opinion on what you should do, when medicating fish.

    3. Always, always eliminate water quality/tank hygiene as a possible culprit. These are easily fixed and can save you alot of heartache. These may be the underlying conditions causing the fishes illness.

    4. Never, ever treat/medicate fish in a display tank. There are far too many variables working against the medication to effectively treat the fish.

    5. Always follow the directions on the package to be safe unless otherwise directed by a professional.

    6. Read all you can about the chemical/product you are going to use to verify pretreatment conditions. Conditions such as temperature, PH, lighting, etc. This is extremely important!

    7. If you add any chemical/treatment to the tank and the fish display obvious stress, PERFORM a water change! Remove the chemical from the water!

    8. Do not expect treatments to work miracles, they take time and generally fish will appear to get worse before they get better.

    9. No matter what anybody tells you, there is no definitive way to diagnose the problem without the person being there. Most advice is an educated guess through experience unless of course a microscope can identify the problem. Even then, it may be a combination of things.

    10. Always, always follow strict quarantine procedures no matter how healthy the fish look!
