Default Birding Lens as a Macro Lens

Since my Z9 and 400 with TC 2.0 is setup for birds it also does do pretty well as a macro lens. I do have to manually focus the lens sometimes.

Pat those came out really well . its challenging using teleconverters for macro because of the loss of detail and light but they are definitely useful. I use them alot on my 50 mm and 100 mm 2.8 . I also use extension tubes.

Your pics here are impressive because its really hard to get good results with Long lens for macro.

Whats the close focus distance of the 400mm with out the tc?

Thank you Al and too be honest I wasn't expecting good results. The minimum focal length of the 400mm lens is 8.21 feet. If I can find the subject by manually focusing the lens, the lens will do the rest. I'm not sure why since the camera is always looking for the bird eye.

Al, I do use extension tubes on my macro lens but I do not carry it when I am shooting birds

I totally get that Al but as a less then five foot female I have to be careful. I generally carry a backpack with water and maybe one lens. Next time I go to the Orlando Wetlands I will carry the macro lens on the Z8 as the wild blue iris will be blooming and I love those flowers.

They are very pretty flowers Pat.

There have been times I wished I didnt bring alot of gear. Hopping in and out of cars is easy with alot of gear.... walking around for miles with it is another story altogether. I get your gear limitations entirely.
