Default Empty tank with old filter. Keep cycled with ammonia?

I've got a 29 gal tank with water and Aquaclear running but no fish in it. Before adding discus
I need to make sure it's cycled. Should I drop in a little NH3 to keep it cycled?
I have not bought the 3 discus yet as I won't be back home until after the
solar eclipse trip. I figure an empty tank won't feed the biomass in the filter.
Not sure I want to use other fish to keep it cycled. Would a couple drops
    of ammonia per day work?

Instead of ammonia for the time you are gone you can put fish food in the tank and leave it, this will do the same thing.
