Default Sirloin Tips dipped in Garlic Guard

    Hi all,

Just realized my thread title sounds a little like a menu entrée, ok well the pet stores here are all out of beefheart and no success sourcing it grocer's meat dept. so I'm going to try some lean beef.

I read through the recipe stickies and my head is spinning, realize I need to brush up on my cooking skills. So I have up some beef sirloin tips which are extremely lean, and also have garlic guard. I don't see any posts on feeding lean beef to Discus -- is there anything wrong with this? I have enough beefhart for 2 more days but plan on feeding this on Saturday.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Kenny

I know people have used lean chopped meat and ground turkey to make food.. Maybe run some searches, you should come up with a decent amount of options

It will work but I wouldn't feed it long term. It still has a greater fat content than heart.

I've raised good fish on mix based on 99% fat free ground turkey.

BTW, I'm a bit of a foodie. When I saw the title of your thread it sounded like something for humans to eat. In my mind's eye I saw the beef tips under a rich garlic sauce. Hope you like the Turkey. It worked very well for me and nothing could be easier.

Yeah I realized that, lol. I'm thinking to do one of the ground turkey recipes this weekend. I hope the fish like it, there's only one real pet store here and their stock is unreliable.

    Update:
I tried the sirloin tips in garlic guard this morning, they picked at it but weren't really fans of it. So I made a simple concoction of ground turkey mixed with garlic guard/gelatin, and they ate really well. I'd say they ate this better than the beefheart I'd been giving them so no urgent need for that when it's available again. My next step is to create a real recipe with the ground turkey like one of the ones here on the forum.

First off, every time I see this thread title pot up I get hungry.

Second, I'm glad you and your Discus are happy with the 99% fat free turkey.

Third, I like to keep things simple. Rather than go to all the work of making a complicated recipe I'd feed a variety of several foods.

    Hi Liz,

Good advice, maybe I'll look at some other options as well. For the time being this turkey is replacing the BH in my three feedings per day:

7am: 3 cubes Bloodworms & Tony Tan Grand Champion pellets
    12pm: 2 cubes BH & 4 cubes AL's FDBWs
    7pm: 2 cubes BH & 4 cubes AL's FDBWs

My recipes I did were a catastrophe. The cause was the gelatin. Loved the way the gelatin holds together the ground meat by the way.

My first recipe I used a 7 gram pack of gelatin mixed in 1/4 cup garlic guard which was heated. This was quickly mixed with about 1/4 pound of ground turkey. My Discus loved it but I noticed a few small clumps of gelatin that had separated and mixed with my sand, which I thought I managed to siphon out. So I did another recipe with less gelatin, this time about 2 grams mixed with 1/4 pound 98% fat free ground sirloin.

I didn't fully see the extent of the damage because of the color of my pool filter sand which is light beige, but this evening I realized there are clumps & layers of this gelatin everywhere in my tank. A huge mess because it mixes with the sand and python siphon wasn't powerful enough to suck it out, had to lift & tilt gravel tube with every gelatin clump. I spent an hour siphoning this out and am pretty sure I didn't get it all.

All this sand will have to go so I ordered some 'Sparkly White Jurassic Sand' which is silica (inert). Costs a little more but excited about this since it's very white, have not been a fan of my PFS from the start because the color hides alot of uneated food.

I hope some other rookies will read my post and not make the same mistake.
