    Default Analytical/Lab directory

    Hi all,
I'd like to start a database of labs that hobbyists and breeders can send their fish to for disease ID.

    Why do this?

Often times we have many tanks with many fish. The sacrifice of a few to save the rest may be well worth it. Additionally the information acquired by the researchers may help others.

If you have any info on labs , please post it here.

    Thanks,
    al

Ps... lets make this an international listing!

Recently I have had the pleasure of discussing fish diseases with Dr. Stephen A. Smith from.....

Aquatic Medicine at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine . They have a diagnostic lab there....

This is an excerpt of his email to me on it...

diagnostic services, I provide bacterial, parasitic
and histopatholgy evaluation of tropical, ornamental and foodfish
fish sent to me alive. Depending on the situation, I usually request
6-8 infected/affected individuals alive for analysis, though this can
be modified if the situation warrants. Obviously I am not able to
return the fish. As this service is provided through the service
laboratories of our veterinary college, there is a minimum base fee
charge of $50.00 which is billed through the college. Additional cost
may be incurred by special tests required such as bacterial
sensitivities. We do not offer specific viral
isolation/identification, but depend on histopathology to provide
preliminary evidence of potential viral pathology. So the bottom line
is that a fish client will spend approximately $60-$100 to ship live
fish overnight, and then we add on another $50 for diagnostic
evaluation. Presently about 40% of my caseload is tropical/ornamental
fish, with the majority of that being from private angelfish and
other cichlid producers. I also provide diagnostic services for
    several public aquariums.
    Visit his website at....

hope this is of use to you all....

    Al,

Thanks for doing the legwork on this. I give Dr. Smith's name and work address out frequently, but I never had any contact information to give with it.

    Chien,

I sent fish to be tested recently to the University of GA. Between shipping and the tests, the total was right at $200. That was 2 fish being tested and overnight shipping.

I won't hesitate to do it again if the need arises or to send more fish in to be sure the disease is cured.

You get a report back that gives all the details. "Gold in My opinion".
