    Default not marital bliss

    hi,

can someone shed some light please?

i have an established pair that have now started to show aggression to each other, the story as follows .................
i bought a young pair from a friend, they spawned about 5 times and fertalized the last time, they were in a tank of thier own and seemed happy together. always swimming close and staying by eachothers side swimming and eating blissfuly.
i took them and replicated thier enviroment, there was a nitrite spike and i moved them to another tank with other fish the male started picking on his spouse, not super aggressive but bad enough, now they are back alone in the replica tank and perams perfect, the squabbles continue and they haven't settled to get it on yet. strange as it seems watching them they now look out of love.

    any input would be appriciated.

    Hello Larry
By moving the pair it has upset her spawing cycle, but the male still wants
to spawn and she wont until she is ready, hence the aggression from the
male. Try putting a divider in the tank but make sure they can still see each
other, feed both fish well, be patient and when she is ready she will start
to display again, then take the divider out and see what happens.
    Good luck.

    Hello Larry
Have been keeping discus for many years as a hobby, but recently set up
discus in suffolk. You wil see me advertising in the PFK magazine.
But when the storm hit the other week i lost the power supply for to long
and 7 tanks of fish died, thats the first power cut i've had for 13 years. The
only fish that did'nt suffer any effects were my stock of wild caught fish, perhaps this says something of todays tank bred fish, i don't know.
So now i am in the process of re-stocking with mostly wild fish as these
are my real passion in discus. Once you have kept wild discus and seen the
many diferent strains of wild fish you will be hooked.

    hi pete,

sorry about the losses and excelent about the new business venture!

i know power cuts are rare over here but i got me a cheep generator just in case, runs on deisel and would cover a fish room of heaters and air pumps was £100.

love to see some pics of your fish/setup some time if you can. GL with all cheers.

    Hello Larry

Sorry i did'nt answer your first question fully, i have had problems in the past
when moving certain pairs even if the water parameters are the same, if
the fish are settled and feel safe in there own tank even moving them a few
feet away into a different position can sometimes put one or the other of
for a time, but hopefully they should settle back into sync again soon.
Also i know i should have my backside kicked for not having a generator, so
where did you get yours from, that sounds like a good price.
Iwill also try and post some pics when the new stock arrives and settles in

    pete

p.s also it might be a interesting debate on the forum about do we need
new blood introduced into our tank bred discus , are certain strains becoming
    genetically weaker?.

    Larry,

I like the tank divider idea. It should definitely help. I've used it with plenty of other cichlid pairs who look like they are planning a divorce!

    Pete,

Welcome to the board! Sorry to hear about your losses. I had the same thing happen to me about 10 years ago and I also got wise and bought a generator.

I'm with you about the wild fish. That's a step I'm looking to take at some point as well. It sounds like you are a valuable addition to our membership. Please post as much as you have time!
